25 Point buy system recommendations!

Hey all!

I'm building a Whisper Gnome Beguiler Lvl 1. We are going to be using the 25 Point Buy system. What do you guys recommend I put as stats?

Just wondering...

Here's an excerpt from the Wizards web page about whisper gnomes: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20040807a&page=3

You're losing Charisma, which some of the Beguiler's skills depend upon. Otherwise, whisper gnome is a good choice. Beguilers benefit from many good stats, but they're not exactly dependent on all of them. I don't have a lot of experience playing them (who does?) but I would say to focus on int and dex. Int helps your spellcasting, and your skills (Beguilers have an excellent skill list.) Dex helps your AC and your thief-like abilities. Secondary focuses would be in Cha, which helps your bluff and thus your feinting, and Con, which of course helps you stay alive with a d6 hit die, as well as your Concentration skill.

I'd go with something like:

6 str (0 points)
14 dex (4 points)
14 con (4 points)
16 int (10 points)
8 wis (0 points)
12 cha (6 points)

That's only 24 points, so throw an extra point into anything but int or cha. It will probably be wasted, since I'd say to put your level 4 and 8 stat points into int, in order to get more skills and bonus spells.

That will give you 8 HP at level 1, AC 14 in leather armor, 1 1st-3rd level bonus spell, and 36 skill points.

Most the times, I recommend starting off with the standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) and than vary from there. If you think you can afford a few weak spots, reduce the 10 to another 8 to increase a 12 to a 14 or the 15 to a 16.

Since the Beguiler has so many skills, I think a more balanced array will make mor sense. Put the 15 in the casting stat (Int?), and the 8 probably towards Strength.

Thanks very much for the replies...I have a few questions though :)

Alright, first off:

Benimoto:

The calcs you are using, do you mean these calcs with the whisper gnome stats already included (I dont' think so personally)...that would mean that I would actually have a 4 to strength.

Whisper Gnome Stats:
+2 Dex
+2 Con
-2 Str
-2 Cha

So basically the stats would look like:
Str 4
Dex 16
Con 16
Int 16
Wis 8
Cha 10

How does that sound to you guys?

Mustrum_Ridcully:

Using your stats basis, I would be thinking that this would be ok:

Str 8
Dex 16
Con 15
Int 15
Wis 8
Cha 10

Which do you guys think would be better? Unless there is another race that is better suited (not an elf/half elf or Human for the moment please).

Any other suggestions would be great!

Thanks for all the help so far!

No, no, my stats are already modified for the Whisper Gnome's stat adjusments. You can't start with less than an 8 (pre-adjustment) using the standard point buy method.

This might be fine stats, though I would probably thing the Charisma should get the 13, and the Constitution the 10. (For Str8, Dex16, Con12, Int15, Wis8, Cha13).
That seems to fit a Beguiler better (but I don't have much knowledge about the class. I read it maybe once)
