2E Thief/3E Rogue

I find myself shifting from the original concept of my character because of the nice 'stereotpye' given to him. I'm also thinking of multi-classing just to step away from where it looks like he's heading. Sure, I admit, he's swindled in the past and flashes a smile if he thinks it will get him anywhere but steal just to steal? Nope, not his gig at all.

Anyone else have this affliction?

I've had this a lot in my games. What I really dislike is the fact that the "social" rogues still end up with the sneak attack ability for no reason. I've ended up making up new classes and prestige classes to be better fit the concept for many of my players.

When it comes down to it all my players end up wanting the rogue class for the skill points and skill list, not the other stuff.

Ask the party wizard "why is this my job? You could've taken knock as a spell, you know?" :)

Actually I'm pretty sure the party's wizard will pick that one up ASAP. As I said, Kastil is not very good at picking locks. Better keep an eye on your wife though

I'm sticking to my guns. Besides, the party's half dead because I didn't check for traps on a door before I opened.

::yells:: See? I told you I wasn't that kind of rogue!

Good man! See what their false assumptions got them?!? :D

"I'm a rogue, but I can't do jack with traps and doors. Don't expect me to. Expect me to, and we will all die. I cannot do it."

If they're still bullheaded enough not to prepare Knock or hire out for another rogue, it's their problem, not yours. :)

You know, looking over the skills section in the PHB, any class can SEARCH for a trap and then render it harmless. Sure, they're cross skills but not completely 'taboo' to the other classes. In fact, a fighter in the group did take ranks in OPEN LOCKS. This of course made most of the party think he took one level of rogue for all the skill points. I think I was the only one to ask him OOC if he did. His answer made me grin.

Him- "Nope I'm all fighter. Just picked up OPEN LOCKS for the heck of it. Afraid I'll invade on your territory?"

Me- "Have you seen me pick locks?"

Yes and no.

Non-rogues can only find traps with a Search DC of 20 or less... and there are a lot of traps with higher Search DCs. And only rogues can disable magical traps.

Naw, don't shift. Stick to your guns. :)

Sing it, brother.

My character is a rogue. I made him a rogue because I wanted to make an athlete and the Rogue has all the Tumble, Jump, Balance, etc. skills. Eventually, I branched into Acrobat to expand on this concept.

Still, no one ever made the mistake of asking me to pick a lock, disarm a trap, or even stand guard -- because I suck at all of those. Hey, with my one level of Wizard and a familiar, I more than doubled my spot and listen.

I'm also LG and the stongest character in the group. My Rogue is responsible for upholding some sort of moral compass for the group and often fills the role that Paladins often do in that regard. It's may job to do the heavy lifting and door bashing. Recently, we had to cross a pit, and I had to pick up the Bard and jump across with him, jump back and pick up the sorcerer to do the same thing.

About the only Rogue-like thing I do is Tumble through enemy threat zones and set up flanking so I can gut them. For the most part, though, the party views me as a warrior.

Of course, what's funny is that my wife, who is a Duelist, is playing a Fighter with the bare minimum of Rogue levels to qualify for the Duelist PrC. She's got one of the lowest strengths (only the sorcerer is lower), the highest dexterity, and the highest intelligence. As an elf, she also got the Cloak of Elvenkind, so she's the advanced scout. Woe unto the aggressor who says "Ah, the advanced scout is usually a Rogue with low HP and easy to hit."

Darn straight. You should stick to your guns... assuming other developments in the game don't cause you to shift your focus for your own reasons.
I ran into similar trouble in an RPGA Living Greyhawk game with my 1st level rogue. He was a hunter for the local village so he had good sneaking and alertness skills, good trap building skills, but no opening locks or picking pockets skills. That rather surprised the DM. Fortunately, not knowing what kinds of skill sets scratch-built parties of PCs will have at LG events, the adventures are generic enough that you can get through them without too much of a problem.

In a game I'm running, the rogue PC has morphed from a grown-up urchin to having an actual focus in life. He's become the bodyguard of the priest and is developing himself for the devoted defender prestige class. His alertness skills as a rogue have been very helpful in doing so. And he'll have a heck of a sucker punch too with that sneak attack.

Here. Here. Kastil is not a rogue by choice but because it is a means to survive where he grew up. Kind of like in real life, you use the skills you are good at to get by.

The player in the game has decided to play a thieving type rogue and a halfling to boot. I'm skeptical though. This is the third character in this game and we're only 2nd level (though this could have something to do with our DM and xps giving ::waves:: Hi Steve!). First the monk. He left seeking 'growth' elsewhere. Then a chain wielding fighter that had a bloody end to his story, and now this character. My bets on he grows 'bored' off this character real quick though they say it's to get back at me for a little annoying teenaged rogue I made for another game we play in.

::adjusts halo:: whatever do they mean by that?
