D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 and hold/dominate animal

I was wondering if the hold/dominate animal spells work ONLY on animals, not say, magical beasts, or if they work on things other than type=animal.

The target of both Charm Animal and Dominate Animal is "one animal", so it only works on creatures of the animal type, not other types, like magical beasts...

The real question in my mind is do they work on the Druid/Rangers animal companions who may or may not be animals depending on your interpretation of the conficting rules.
