[3.5] Answering the Call

Orinar listens to the voices, and shrugs his shoulders. He looks toward the others and cocks his head to the side, clearly wondering if they understand the echoing words.

"Well, if you needed light, you could've just asked..." Lars mutters when the others light up a lantern. He forgets sometimes that others need light to see by. It's just a convenience for him, to appreciate colors and fine details.

At the top of the stairs, Lars turns to look at the others and raises an eyebrow in confusion. The noise down the hall was gibberish to him.

Quietly, he whispers "Shut the light and wait quietly for my signal." Lars ushers the others down the stairs just a bit, while he waits near the top, staying still and listening to see if the voices come closer to the stairway.

Lars quietly requests the light be shuttered. Orinar and Menno take positions on the stairs, Menno falling back a few steps. Kyl shutters the lantern, and taking a hint from Menno, cautiously moves down a few steps before crouching low against the wall. There is little in the way of cover or concealment, but Kyl does the best he can to hide.

Lars, on the landing at the top of the stairs, listens intently. None of the voices grow louder or closer or more distinct, but after a few seconds, Lars does hear the clear clack! clack! of boot heels on the stone floor.

A cautious peak around the corner reveals a man-sized goblinoid just coming into view from the western corridor. In a few more seconds, it will reach the stair's landing, where it will surely see the adventurers.

This'll be my last post until Sunday afternoon/evening at the earliest. I'm going on retreat in a few hours.

Lars just waits for the footsteps to reach the stairs, at which point he takes a step forward and swings his battleaxe at where the approaching humanoid's head or shoulders should be! He quietly declares "Defend thyself, or join the bones at thy doorstep!"

Attack roll of 22, for 5 damage. 1d20+4=22, 1d8+2=5

[sblock=ooc]As far as I know, paladins aren't prohibited from executing ambushes (though my own houserules often prevent that by tweaking and expanding on the code, they also don't gimp low-level paladins nearly so much as 3.5 does).

Heironeous is described as using the best tactics and strategies available, and I don't recall the Dragon article on his faith (from around 2 years ago) saying anything against ambushes, so I figure it's okay for Lars.[/sblock]

Kyl holds perfectly still, unwilling to give away his position. No doubt his party could handle this solo creature, it was the possibility of more that kept him still. Kyl understood that the confusion a sudden attack could cause in an attacking group would be worth the wait.

Paladin's Ambush! (Surprise Round)

Lars just waits for the footsteps to reach the stairs, at which point he takes a step forward and swings his battleaxe at where the approaching humanoid's head or shoulders should be! He quietly declares "Defend thyself, or join the bones at thy doorstep!"

The axe bites hard into the goblinoid, catching the side of its helmet and neck. It rocks under the mighty strike, staggering against the wall, but amazingly remains both standing and conscious!

[sblock=Paladins and Ambushes]I also have no problem in general with paladins making ambushes. This is, for me, one of those grayer areas that hinges largely on intent. Ambushing a goblinoid? Not likely a problem. Ambushing a shopkeeper to steal his strongbox? Going to be trouble.

The monster isn't down, but it's very close indeed. Orinar can make an attack during this surprise round, but it'll be easier if Kyl unshutters the lantern at least a bit.

If the monster doesn't go down before the surprise rounds ends, it will have a chance to yell an alarm.
