[3.5] Answering the Call

Lars Crichton, HP 20/22 (5 nonlethal), AC 13, Armor 5

Lars rushes forward when the opportunity presents itself, saying in Common "Defend thyselves, scum!" as he charges the nearest hobgoblin, laying into its shoulder with his axe.
[sblock=ooc]Lars acts on Initiative 10.
1d20+1=10

Luckily, we're just close enough for Lars' armored butt to reach the hobgoblin with a partial charge. Moving up 1 space and forward 4 (technically just 4 spaces/20 ft. of movement, since the first diagonal is treated as 1 square). Charging hobgoblin #1.

Got a 22 to hit on the charge, for 4 damage. At least this time it wasn't my attack roll that the dicebot hated. :erm:

Hobgoblins! (Surprise Round + Round 1)

Acting with impressive speed, Menno casts a spell, laying down an area of slippery grease across the hallway, catching three of the monsters and splitting the group. The monsters within the area lose their balance and fall. Seeing the hobgoblins charging, Orinar takes a moment to call upon his innate pyschic abilities and creates a field of force to help guard him from harm.

Lars rushes forward when the opportunity presents itself, saying in Common "Defend thyselves, scum!" as he charges the nearest hobgoblin, laying into its shoulder with his axe. The monster grits its fangs, growling something sounds suspiciously like a pained obscenity.

Kyl springs from hiding, hurling a hobgoblin javelin down range. The projectile flies high, clattering against the far wall, just missing its target as it slips and falls in the grease.

Menno next hurls a blast of fire, centering it on near the northwestern edge of the grease. When the flash and heat fade, two more hobgoblins lay on the floor. The remaining hobgoblins within the grease frantically try to rise, but to no avail. The sprawl on the floor again. Even though they cannot stand to fight, their piercing cries of alarm ring out unhindered.

OOC: Actions for Lars, Orinar, and Kyl to finish the round, please. Menno's at the top of the next round.

"Move, Kyl!" bellows Orinar. He pauses a moment to let his companion step out of his way, and then he charges forward, greatsword raised high over head. As he reaches the enemy, his blade slashes downward with incredible force...

Lars Crichton, status unchanged

Lars sets his jaw grimly and hews into the injured hobgoblin again, this time driving his battleaxe heavily into the other shoulder, his shield still raised protectively. "May your deaths be swifter than burning in that oil. Meet my axe head-on like men!"

If the hobgoblin falls, Lars takes a few steps forward to menace the remaining goblinoids with the bloody axe.

[sblock=ooc]Another swing, and better this time. 22 to hit with the axe for 7 damage to hobgoblin #1. If that hobgoblin drops unconscious, Lars will step into its space to threaten the ones burning in the Grease, making sure they don't get up or away too easily (nor suffer the burn too long before meeting Maglubiyet).

Menno the Inferno

Menno is slightly surprised when his grease lasts more then couple of seconds, but he takes what he can get. It seems the song of dragons in his blood is growing stronger.

He walks forward behind his companions ending diagonaly about ten feet behind Lars and prepares to hurl another bead of fire if any hobgoblin(s) survive just as grease dissipates.

"It's safe to pass now."

"Benedict, please fly up short way into that corridor and scout. Take care not to meet any spears on the way."

OOC: If any goblins survive the barrage, one last burst will clear the map. Menno will end up about ten feet behind and to the left (that is, on opposite side of hallway) of Lars.

OOC: Recent drama in my life has included not only an emergency room visit to be misdiagnosed but also a car accident. Since I've taken forever to get this game moving again, I'm going "fast-forward" the fight, so to speak.

The party works quickly and efficiently. Hobgoblin blood flows across the floor, spatters over the walls. All five monsters lay dead, but not before they raised the alarum.

"We're going to have more company real soon!" Kyl says.

Sure enough, everyone can hear cries echoing down the western corridor. More disturbingly, the cries are punctuated by a deep-throated, rumbling growl, as if from some large beast. The party has little time to decide on a course of action. The stairs up are nearby, but they lead to a dead-end. The hallway continues away from noise to the east, but what lies that way is ultimately unknown. Lastly, there is the door leading back to forest.

Orinar rushes from corpse to corpse, going about the gruesome business of removing the hobgoblins hands and adding them to the bloody sack tied at his waste. The giant-kin wasn't just in this for the excitement, afterall...he liked the coin just as much. He keeps a sharp eye out for purses and pouches as well, doing a quick search of each corpse for additional valuables.

"Do we fight, or flee?" he asks, though the steel in his voice clearly indicates that he is ready for another engagement.

Mark, since little "in-game" time has passed, can I assumes Orinar's Force Screen is still active?

Menno looks for a moment at Orinar going around.

"Orinar, please stop that. There will be plenty of time for that soon. We need those tables as baricades or something similar like this door behind us. I'll do it while you lug those barricades out of there. Go, and hurry. Lars, if you can spare some time, do the same."

Menno takes an axe or sword from one of fallen goblinoids and proceeds to hack at the hands, wincing with each strike.

"I say we make a stand. If push comes to shove we can make fighting retreat, these doors look as we could create decent choke point for my spells and your weapons."

OOC: reminder, Benedict is out scouting we should have some advance warning before sizeable force comes at us.
[sblock=Combat preparations, free for all]
One of fighters should make some of this into IC comment.

This should really be more of fighters expertize, but still. We make a barrikade. We put caltrops on the ground. We ready missile weapons. When enemy appears and charges we shoot. Slowed enemies move slowly, we may get two shots at a distance. I can grease things to help slowing them even more. In case of a breach, Menno burns the barrikade while we retreat toward the gate creating another choke point. We kill anything that puts it's head outside. Then after they stop to regroup we pile up some logs or stones there and go find secure place to rest, regain HP and spells or simply continue looking for another way in while they are concentrating on this side.

Orinar shrugs. "You know me, Menno. Ain't one to leave without my payday." But the half-giant rises and moves to the nearby door, his muscles bulging as he attempts to tear it off the hinges.

Assuming he has time: STR check: 15

I realize you want to fight effectively, but there isn't much to make barricades out of. The door, unless you want us to leave back for the common chamber for tables and benches, which would leave Menno & Kyl alone. We don't know how many rounds we have before the reinforcements arrive, but probably not many.
