[3.5] Answering the Call

Menno

OOC: I assume that guy with the javelin waits for Menno to cast again. Ah, well, here goes nothing.

OOC2: Lars could (have)use(d) Lay on Hands, there are two rounds between first and this fight.

Shifting slightly, reminding himself to be more aware of the area he will affect lest his companions suffer, Menno repeats the action from few seconds ago, this time targeting further behind

OOC: target 2,3,4. Fire damage (2d6=4)

Lars raises his battleaxe again and swings it sidelong at the ape that just battered and scraped him, denting his armor and making his head ring. He's too shaken-up to offer any brave words or defiant threats while he fights through the pain. Then he steps back to give Kyl a little room to move in, maybe, and give himself a bit of space to draw on Heironeous' indomitable vitality in a moment. Lars raises his shield and axe quickly to protect himself a bit more as he regains his balance.
[sblock=ooc]No time, Menno. Lars and Orinar were chopping off hobgoblin hands and coin pouches, which would have taken at least those two rounds.

Another attack, fighting defensively this time, then a 5-foot step back into the partial space that's open, to put some distance between himself and the ape. Hoping that Kyl will move in, so Lars can use Lay on Hands next turn.

1d20+5-4=11, 1d8+2=5
Got an 11 to hit, for 5 damage. Almost certainly a miss, sure. But he really can't afford to take another set of hits like that again before he heals.

Reinforcements! (Round 3)

Shifting slightly, reminding himself to be more aware of the area he will affect lest his companions suffer, Menno repeats the action from few seconds ago, this time targeting further behind. The hobgoblin lets fly its javelin just a instant before Menno's magic surges forth, but the weapon clatters harmlessly off the wall several feet to Menno's left. Fire scorches the hobgoblins, but the resulting wounds don't appear too severe.

The paladin retreats, thumping into the wall.

Orinar growls again, shaking off the effects of the terrible dread by sheer force of will. He cries a warning to his companions, even as he steps forward, treading the body of the first ape under his heavy boots. "Ware the leader. A spellcaster he be! His warning spoke, the giantsblood turns his blade upon the next target in line. The blade parts the ape's flesh, but there is little strength behind the strike. The beast roars in fury.

Kyl lunges past Lars. His kukri slashes wide, cutting into and through the ape's abdomen. Entrails spill out on the floor as the beast coughs and sputters, slumping against the wall and sliding down onto its back.

"Ha! Ha!" exclaims Kyl.

The foremost hobgoblins draw longswords and move to engage Orinar and Kyl. The monster's blade slips past Orinar's guard. The half-giant feels the sharp bite of steel through a chink in his armor. The other hobgoblin swings wide against Kyl, who agilely avoids the clumsy attack.

The hobgoblin cleric slips what appears to be a polished shoulder blade from a large pouch at his waist. It reads something from the piece of bone and glares at Menno. A morningstar made of pure force springs into existence near the sorcerer. The mystical weapon attempts to bludgeon Menno, but he ducks out of the path of the strike.

OOC: Party actions are up again.

Hm, eaten by ENW demon. I'll post something later.

here it is:

Seeing that his time has run out, Menno moves so that he gets as clear shot as possible with all combatants in narrow confines of the hallway at the same time putting some distance between himself and spiritual weapon. He mumbles few arcane words and his hands burst into fire. But as he points it toward enemy cleric, fire sputters and dies, dissipating in harmless embers around Menno.

"Uh, oh" is all he can manage as he ducks yet another swing of strange weapon.
[sblock=For Dr.Simon]failed power check (by one rolled 1d20+3 = 7) unless menno gets another caster level somehow. If he does manage to complete the spell 1d20+3 = 14 ranged touch attack; damage 4d6 = 14 (1,1,6,6) - link is somwhere on invisible castle, lost along with the post
[/sblock]
He goes as defensive as he can while still casting spells. If opportunity presents itself he will cast color spray covering all hobbos. He moves right behind Orinar and Kyl waiting for such opportunity. In the meantime he waits for enemy cleric to cast again and targets him with his bursts of flame in hope of disrupting him.

Lars Crichton, the poor man's healer

Lars grits his teeth and sees Orinar suffer further wounds, while he and Kyl took down the ape. "Good work! Press onward! Heironeous, let this warrior fight on a little longer to victory!" the paladin says, reaching out to place a hand on Orinar's back and channel the Archpaladin's vitality into him, closing the wounds but leaving plenty of their pain for now.
[sblock=ooc]Yeah, since the site's problems around 4e's release, I've been copying my posts before hitting Submit, at least most of the time, on the chance that my post might get eaten. Site went down for a bit earlier today when I tried to post, so I'm glad for my paranoia this time.

Lay on Hands to heal Orinar for 4 HP; that'll remove 4 nonlethal damage and the 2 lethal damage Orinar suffered. That leaves me with 2 HP worth of LoH for the day, saved for myself next round or emergency healing of someone else if needed.

Lars' Status: 20/22 HP, 14 nonlethal, AC 15 (t 13, ff 12), Armor Conversion 5[/sblock]

Orinar growls against the pain of the hobgoblin's strike, and slams his foot down on the floor of the corridor, triggering a psychokinetic shock that threatens to send the three remaining opponents tumbling to the ground. Unfortunately, the hobgoblins agiley ride out the tremor.

Lars waits for an opening, which presents itself shortly as Kyl rushes forward. His kukri flashes and clangs! against a hobgoblin's helmet. The creature snarls in pain and noticeably wobbles on its feet.

The floating morningstar gives chase, swinging at Menno, who manages to evade what looked to be a truly powerful attack. The foremost hobgoblins divide their attention between Kyl and Orinar. Kyl sidesteps a sword thrust, making Orinar look all the more clumsy by comparison. The half-giant feels steel again. Surely if not for his banded mail, he'd have been cut to ribbons by now. As it is, even Orinar's great strength flags after the punishment he's taken.

In the rear, the hobgoblin cleric starts to chant. His words are terrible to hear. In Lars's ears, they grow in volume and menace, threatening to break the paladin's courage.

Please make a Will save vs. a mind-affecting fear effect. DC 13. Failure means Lars becomes frightened. If he succeeds, he is shaken for 1 round.

OOC: I wasn't clear where Menno wanted to move to, so I advanced him. This momentarily blocked Lars from moving to Orinar, hence the small shift in iniative order. Ah, the chaos of battle! :)

Feeling his strength ebb, Orinar nonetheless does what he can to end the battle and perhaps give his companions a chance for survival. Giving another ferocious roar, he swings his massive blade over his head, and slashes it downward at his foe with frightening strength...

Lars Chrichton, Paladin of Heironeous

Lars urges the others "Keep fighting!" as he places a hand on Orinar's back again, channeling the last of Heironeous' granted vitality into Orinar. He can't help, however, feeling his nerves rattled at the hobgoblins' continued thrashing of Orinar, and Menno's failure to do anything against the hobgoblins now. The paladin hangs back still, hesitant about rejoining the fight himself. Still, it doesn't take long for him to steel himself once more.

[sblock=ooc]2 more lethal and nonlethal damage healed for Orinar.

Aced my save.

Menno decides not to risk his only remaining reserve spell shooting through chaotic melee in front of him and risking the hit of spiritual weapon. Instead he produces one of his signature fireseeds and lobs it behind right between the cleric and one of the warriors.

Fire damage (2d6=6)
OOC: affecting cleric (#4) and #2
OOC2: as defensive movement as possible while using standard action for fireburst
