[3.5] Answering the Call

Reinforcements! (Round 5)

Menno decides not to risk his only remaining reserve spell shooting through chaotic melee in front of him and risking the hit of spiritual weapon. Instead he produces one of his signature fireseeds and lobs it behind right between the cleric and one of the warriors. Teeth of fire tear into the flesh of the warrior, leaving it smoking on the floor. The cleric bears the full force of the blast. It staggers under the weight of its wounds. The blackened flesh of its face distorts in a vicious grimace, and he roars something in its savage tongue.

Feeling his strength ebb, Orinar nonetheless does what he can to end the battle and perhaps give his companions a chance for survival. Giving another ferocious roar, he swings his massive blade over his head, and slashes it downward at his foe with frightening strength, splitting the hobgoblin from shoulder to groin.

Kyl rushes down the hall, leaping over the fallen hobgoblins. He tries to slip past the cleric's guard, but the hobgoblin whirls its greatsword with impressive skill. The blade cleaves into Kyl, striking him to the floor.

Lars urges the others "Keep fighting!" as he places a hand on Orinar's back again, channeling the last of Heironeous' granted vitality into Orinar. He can't help, however, feeling his nerves rattled at the hobgoblins' continued thrashing of Orinar, and Menno's failure to do anything against the hobgoblins now. The paladin hangs back still, hesitant about rejoining the fight himself. Still, it doesn't take long for him to steel himself once more.

With a terrible roar, the cleric charges Orinar. Its greatsword glances off Orinar's force screen with impressive force. The spiritual morningstar presses its attacks against Menno, but the nimble arcanist avoids what would have been a stout blow to the skull.

OOC: The only enemy still up is the cleric. Kyl is down.

A bit of energy restored by Lars, Orinar meets the cleric head on. As the enemy's blade deflects off his force screen, the half-giant sends a powerful slash of his own greatsword against the hobgoblin.

Lars grits his teeth and growls out "You'll not see another dawn for that, monster," as he steps in and brings his bloody battleaxe down mightily upon the hobgoblin's shoulder, just barely missing his skull.

Once the hobgoblin cleric is down, Lars steps over to Kyl's fallen body and checks to make sure he's still breathing, and if so, he channels the last of Heironeous' healing gift into Kyl, stabilizing the lad.
[sblock=ooc]Hey, since Kyl goes before Lars in the initiative, could I change my healing to 1 point for Orinar, in order to save 1 point for stabilizing Kyl after the fight? Lars wouldn't have used all of his remaining healing energy on Orinar if he saw Kyl fall.

Attacking the hobgoblin cleric with a 24 total (not quite a crit threat) for 8 damage. Then apply emergency first-aid in the form of Lay on Hands for 1 point on Kyl next round, assuming I'm allowed.

Reinforcements! (Final Round)

Menno slips into a defensive posture, hoping now that the way is clear, his more martial allies can put an end to the brutal conflict. Sure enough, a bit of energy restored by Lars, Orinar meets the cleric head on. As the enemy's blade deflects off his force screen, the half-giant sends a powerful slash of his own greatsword against the hobgoblin. Orinar's blade cleaves through armor, flesh, and bone. The gout of blood is terrible.

Before the monster falls, Lars grits his teeth and growls out "You'll not see another dawn for that, monster," as he steps in and brings his bloody battleaxe down mightily upon the hobgoblin's shoulder, just barely missing his skull. More flesh splits. More bones crack. The evil cleric dies.

Once the hobgoblin cleric is down, Lars steps over to Kyl's fallen body and checks to make sure he's still breathing, and if so, he channels the last of Heironeous' healing gift into Kyl, stabilizing the lad. Kyl stirs and groans. Lars can tell that his injuries are serious but not immediately life-threatening. He's taken a beating, for sure, but Kyl will live to fight another day.

"I see we won," Kyl says as he rises wobbily to his feet.

OOC: Okay, the fight's over. The party won, but you all've taken quite a beating. Ball's in your court.

Orinar puts out a hand to steady himself against the wall, and takes a deep breath. His body ached from the bruises he had suffered during the day's trials, and he was tired nearly to the point of exhaustion. He looks down at Lars as the holy warrior treats Kyl. "How is he?" he asks, his voice low.

"Not dead yet..." Lars answers, taking his axe and chopping away the fallen cleric's hand, then chopping off and collecting any pouches that may hold wealth. He collects whatever's left of the spoils to gather, not wasting time with removing enemy armor, weapons, or the like.

"We need to withdraw and gain some distance from this place, probably return to town for a brief respite. I can barely see straight and stand tall right now, and I have no further healing energy from Heironeous. We can't afford to dawdle and suffer another attack such as this. We will regroup and strike again another day," the paladin declares, heading outside once he's gathered the nearest hobgoblin hands and pouches.

OOC: there goes greased weapon idea :)
Estimate money worth of weapons Menno picks, it's not likely we will use them and simply add to total when we're in town. I'll let you know if something pops up that I'll do with them. Menno prefers swords to flails and anything to spears (he will not bother with spears).

"I agree, we go back to town. Don't waste time on that armor it will just slow us down."
Menno picks up weapons of fallen warriors until he feels their weight slowing him. He then looses heaviest of them and wraps others more securely.

Orinar helps the others to collect any valuables, and to collect the hands of the fallen hobgoblins. "Menno, is there any magic about this cleric?"

Menno concentrates for few moments focusing on the fallen cleric and then scanning the hallway for magical auras.

"This one was tough. I cannot believe that spiritual weapon didn't hit me. And that spell that I miscast..." Menno shakes his head..."I'm glad it is ended for now."

"As for magic..."
1. "There is no magic except ours"
2. "This thing(s) are magical: <list of items>"

Orinar continues the looting as his companion looks for magic. "I really hate being forced to leave without our task being finished. But you are right, Menno, those guys were pretty tough. And my dad always said living to fight another day was better than getting rich and dying before you could spend the money."
