[3.5] Answering the Call

Lars shakes his head. "I don't think that's a wise idea, Menno. Under the circumstances, good strategy would advise we regroup outside and wait to see what forces we face. It sounds like something larger or more dangerous is approaching. Best hurry." the paladin says. He helps Orinar chop off hands and belt pouches or the like for appropriation.

Then Lars starts heading for the exit, to go outside and around the corner.

"Very well, you are the experts on this. Benedict, hurry back. Lets try to find something to close off the door as much as possible."

OOC: if i remember correctly, the door swings inward so to hold it closed we would need a rope and anchor and for holding them once they are open we need something to funel the attacks into line. Two fair sized boulder could do the trick, but I don't think we have enough time.

Mark, could you please redescribe the area behind us (once we get out of the door) I read through the thread very fast to get Menno into play, didn't pay much attention at that time...if not, I'll re-read over the weekend.

OOC: No update yet. Just bumping the game off the back pages. I'll get things working later today. Right now, I've got some stuff to do.

:D

Reinforcements! (Round 1)

OOC: This takes place about two rounds after the end of the earlier combat in the hall.

As the party collects a few hands and rapidly discusses plans to meet the oncoming enemies, Benedict the familiar swoops back into view, squawking loudly after having been gone for only a few seconds. Menno senses the bird's fear before it comes into view and flies overhead toward the rear of the party. The animalistic growling rises in volume, and then two snarling apes lurch into view. He stands nearly six feet tall with shoulder more than half that in breadth. Fanged maws stretch wide. Their powerful arms curl and large fists beat barrel-like chests. Behind the apes are four more hobgoblins, three in the fore, one farther back. The rearmost hobgoblin is clad in half-plate and sports a greatsword, the blade of which shows signs of many brutal battles.

For the moment at least, the monsters' pellmell rush has put them at a disadvantage. Can the heroes capitalize on it before their ranks are overrun?

OOC: Party actions are up. next The monsters used their actions to move into the current positions shown on the map at the link below.

Menno fires another of his seemingly endless beads of fire. It flies between the apes striking the point just behind them.

OOC: affecting area to include A1, A2, 1 and 2 Fire damage (2d6=8)

OOC2: if beasts or plated hobgoblin show to be too dangerous, Menno will fire one of his scorching rays. If he is forced to spend two of those he is effectively lost for the rest of the day as combatant.

Lars steps forward to face the apes, face grim. "Prepare to die, beasts," he threatens. The paladin raises his battleaxe and brings it down powerfully upon the same ape Orinar is moving in to strike......

[sblock=ooc]5-foot step into the space facing both apes, attacking ape #1.

As has been luck so far, my attack roll sucks yet my damage roll is good. Does a 12 hit an ape? If they ran, they'll at least have no Dex bonus to AC this turn, and I can only hope......pffft, as if that's really gonna be enough for me to hit. On the extremely small chance I somehow hit with a 12, it's 8 damage.

Really wish I had the chance to Lay on Hands before the fight, but they showed up so quickly...

Reinforcements! (Round 2)

Menno fires another of his seemingly endless beads of fire. It flies between the apes striking the point just behind them. The fiery explosion leaves one hobgoblin badly scorched on the floor and fills the air with the thick stench of burnt fur.

[sblock=Menno]Remember that areas of effect must start from a vertex. Menno's beads of fire affect four squares around a central point, affecting both apes and hobgoblin 1.[/sblock]

Lars steps forward to face the apes, face grim. "Prepare to die, beasts," he threatens. The paladin raises his battleaxe and brings it down powerfully upon the same ape Orinar is moving in to strike. Lars's clumsy strike clips the ape's shoulder, opening a bloody gash. With little choice left to the flee or fight question, Orinar roars a challenge and steps forward to engage the foremost ape. His greatsword slashes through the air, cutting into the hairy beast, which staggers and falls as the half-giant's weapon cleaves deep into its side. Kyl rushes forward, eager for the fight, but unable to get past Lars and Orinar into striking position.

"When you can, shift ranks!" he urges.

The remaining apes lashes out at Lars. Its powerful fist slams across his head, setting up a high-pitched ring in his ears. In the next instant, the ape's fanged maw clamps on his forearm. Flesh bruises as Lars yanks away from the beast's jaws.

The half-plate clad hobgoblin barks harsh orders. Both hobgoblins draw javelins, one hurling its weapon at Orinar. The half-giant handily blocks the missile with the blade of his greatsword. The other hobgoblin holds its javelin at the ready, as if waiting for the right moment to strike. The hobgoblin leader growls and points its own greatsword toward Orinar. Evil sounding words spill from its throat and a terrible dread tries to grip Orinar's fighting spirit.

Orinar growls again, shaking off the effects of the terrible dread by sheer force of will. He cries a warning to his companions, even as he steps forward, treading the body of the first ape under his heavy boots. "Ware the leader. A spellcaster he be! His warning spoke, the giantsblood turns his blade upon the next target in line. The blade parts the ape's flesh, but there is little strength behind the strike.
