[3.5] Answering the Call

Hobgoblins! (Round 1)

Lars continues his rush, charging at the nearest hobgoblin and taking a swipe at it with his battleaxe. "Have at thee!" the paladin cries. His axe bites deep and true. The hobgoblin collapses to the floor under the powerful strike. It isn't dead, but will certainly bleed out soon.

Orinar moves wide around the table, intent on engaging the hobgoblin on the left. He holds his greatsword ready in hand as he moves. Kyl follows behind Lars, but dodges off to the side and ducks down behind the banquet table. Menno moves into position where he can attack with his longspear, backing up the paladin.

The hobgoblins recover for their initial shock. The evil humanoids move quickly, dropping dishes and barking what sound like either orders or expletives, forming up near the end of one of the longer tables. They draw javelins as they move, and then let fly at the adventurers. Three of the javelins clatter through the dishes on the tables. The fourth strikes home. Even through his armor, Orinar feels the heavy iron point thud! into his shoulder.

Orinar growls in pain from the strike of the javelin, thankful that his armor prevented the missile from tearing through his shoulder. Still, he knew it was severely bruised, and would put him at a disadvantage in combat.

Enacting his natural abilites as he strides forward, Orinar mentally focuses a field of psychic force to help protect him from further damage.

Lars Crichton, AC 12 (t/ff 10), HP 11/11, armor conversion 5

Lars scoffs at the retreating hobgoblins. "Such cowardice! Face us like men!"

He charges forward again, over the body of the hobgoblin he cut down a moment ago, raising the bloody axe overhead for another devastating swing at the hobgoblin dead-ahead....

....But he stumbles a bit over the fallen hobgoblin, and his strike is clumsy when he reaches the new target.

[sblock=ooc]Charging again, at hobgoblin #5 on the map. Charging adjustments factored into Lars' stats this round. The dicebot hates Lars.....a 10 to hit, for 5 damage.

Kyl scrambles along the floor behind the table, picking up one of the hobgoblin's javelins. Menno throws caution to the wind, rushing along behind Lars. He stabs with his longspear past the paladin, and the point bites into the hobgoblin's hip. The monster spins under the impact, falls, and cracks! its head on the floor.

The hobgoblins move into action. One rushes to its left, running along the northern edge of the room and around the table. The other two rush away from Orinar to take up attack positions against Lars, drawing their longswords as they run. Lars parries one attack, but another glances off his helm, causing his ears to ring and flashes of color to swim before his eyes.

Lars Crichton, HP 9/11 (5 nonlethal), AC 14, Conversion 5

Lars grunts in pain and mutters "That was foolish of me." Louder, he says to the hobgoblins around him, "Heironeous smite thee, foul cretins!" as he regains his balance and swings the battleaxe at the one that struck him. His axe gleams momentarily with silver light, as do Lars' silvery eyes.

His axe strikes true into the hobgoblin's chest, but Lars' head still rings a bit and for a moment he's unable to focus and see how well he struck, the pain distracting him for just an instant as the blade cuts into goblinoid flesh.

[sblock=ooc]Attacking the hobgoblin that struck me, Smite Evil for +3 to hit and +1 to damage (if the hobgob is evil, as Lars would expect), with a 22 to hit for 4 damage. InvisibleCastle really doesn't like me lately......though at least for once it gave me a decent attack roll.

Determined to aid Lars, Orinar continues forward, leaping atop the trestle table seperating him from the enemy. Using the height granted by the table to his advantage, the giantskin slashes with his greatblade, though there is little strength behind the strike.

The dragon awakens

Menno steps to his left clearing broad back of his companion. Getting sight of his target he breathes out small bead of fire and it lands behind enemy line where it expands in fiery inferno reaching almost to Lars, but not touching him.

Face the wrath of dragons, you spawn of darkness!
Fiery burst (2d6=9)

OOC: good start, above average roll :)

Hobgoblins! (Final Round)

His axe strikes true into the hobgoblin's chest, but Lars' head still rings a bit and for a moment he's unable to focus and see how well he struck, the pain distracting him for just an instant as the blade cuts into goblinoid flesh. The creature's armor takes most of the blow, but its grimace of pain cannot be hidden.

Determined to aid Lars, Orinar continues forward, leaping atop the trestle table seperating him from the enemy. Using the height granted by the table to his advantage, the giantskin slashes with his greatblade, though there is little strength behind the strike. Nevertheless, the hobgoblin crumples under the strike.

Kyl pops up from his crouch and throws a javelin at the hobgoblin coming around the table toward Lars's flank. The missile catches the creature square in the chest, staggering it back into the table and then to the floor in a clatter of dishes.

Menno steps to his left clearing broad back of his companion. Getting sight of his target he breathes out small bead of fire and it lands behind enemy line where it expands in fiery inferno reaching almost to Lars, but not touching him.

"Face the wrath of dragons, you spawn of darkness!"

The radius of fire flares out, catching two of the downed hobgoblins it is flames. When the heat and smoke dissipate, none of the monsters remaining standing. They are all down, and dead or dying.

188 each! That puts everyone at 1013 XP, if my notes are correct. That's enough for 2nd-level. See OOC thread, please.

Neurotic: A 5-foot radius attack covers a 10-ft. by 10-ft. square with the center being a vertex, enough to catch two of the three hobgoblins. I marked the fiery burst on the map with a cross at its centerpoint.

Lars: 2 lethal, 5 nonlethal.
Orinar: 6 nonlethal.
Kyl: uninjured.
Menno: 1 lethal.
