[3.5] Answering the Call

"Well, that was bracing," says the giantsblood to Lars as the last of the hobgoblins falls to the ground. He continues to hold his bloodied greatsword at the ready, cocking his head to listen for any sign of reinforcements.

Lars sighs and looks around. "Looks like that's all of them. Thank Heironeous....I wasn't fighting my best. I shall endeavor to do better in our next fight. Now, let's return to the hallway and find our next target." He cleans the blood off his battleaxe quickly, then takes whatever valuables he can find on the nearest hobgoblins. Only coins and other lightweight valuables.

That done, Lars walks back to the hallway and resumes his attempt to stroll quietly ahead in his armor....but fails horribly at being quiet, his armor clanking with every step, his shield bumping against the armor as he goes.

Menno

"Orinar, would you take care of greasly details?" asks Menno pointing at hobgoblins.

"Benedict, you too may have your desert if you like. There are plenty of eyes around. And when you're finish, please fly around see if you can find something suspicious."

Menno would prefer not to see any of that however and he gets busy with searching around with sight attuned to magical emanations slowly returning to hallway.

OOC: Detect magic all around the room and back to the hallway.

(Assuming he hears nothing) At Menno's words, Orinar goes about the grisly task of harvesting the hands from the fallen hobgoblins, taking a few moments to search each of the bodies for valuables as he does so.

Lars moves out of the dining hall back toward the stairs down. Kyl takes up position near the entrance after scooping up another javelin. While Benedict snacks on a few eyeballs, Menno and Orinar search the room. Menno's detect magic reveals nothing. The mundane search turns up little. One hobgoblin has a bit of quartz tied up with string around its neck. Another has a few pieces of silver in a pouch.

[sblock=Treasure]
The quartz is worth 10 gp. There are 13 sp.

Lars looks around with his keen vision, piercing the dark, and heads down the corridor in the opposite direction from the dining hall to see what's at the other end of the intersection. His battleaxe and shield remain raised and ready. This time, he leaves it up to the others to decide if they want to cover the lantern or follow him in the dark. The noise of their short battle might have already alerted any other hobgoblins nearby, anyway.

Menno

Menno follows slowly, while his spell lasts and then keeps tabs on celestial touched warrior in case he gets into trouble. He stays in the dark, but within sight of the light and within earshot of Lars.

Through Benedict he also watches Orinar, again, in case HE gets into trouble.

Orinar finishes up, dropping the severed hobgoblin hands in his bloody burlap sack, and drops the coin and quartz into his beltpouch for later divying up. He then readies his massive blade, and moves to follow Lars and Menno.

Lars quickly discovers that the hallway extending on the other side of the stairs is a dead-end. The only to proceed is back down the stairs toward the entrance. Lars, followed by Menno, Orinar, and Kyl, carefully descend the steps, moving as quietly as possible. Kyl carries the lantern partially hooded to provide some light. The stairs are steep enough without trying to go down them in the dark.

At the bottom of the stairs, three choices present themselves. The party can leave the way they came in, head to the left along the northwesterly passage, or explore to the right down the easterly corridor.

OOC: The map of the entrance area is here.

Knowing Orinar's darkvision might see something he cannot, the giantsbreed waits for the holy warrior to scan the corridors, letting him determin which way they should go.
