[3.5] Answering the Call

(OOC: I believe you mean Lars, Rhun.) :)

Lars is disappointed to find the dead-end, but heads back downstairs and to the entryway once more. After a moment's indecision, he leads the group to the right of the entrance.

Lars heads east with the others following behind. The corridor travels about 30 feet before taking a sharp turn to the south. Ahead about 20 feet, the passage turns again, back to the east.

Suddenly from the rear, a thud! echoes through the hall. A few seconds later, there is a harsh laugh, and then the sound of booted feet against stone. It's not possible to tell how many boots, but certainly more than one pair. Fortunately, they do not seem to making haste.

Looking back the way they came, no member of the party can see anything but empty corridor.

Lars grits his teeth and leads the group back the way they came, to see what just happened. He has a terrible idea, and hopes it's not the case.

"Ambush," says Orinar quietly, talking to himself. "Damnations." The giantsbreed moves to stand shoulder to shoulder with Lars, sword in hand and ready for combat. "If we form up, we are in a better position to meet the enemy." He prepares to create a shield of mental force at the first sign of the enemy.

Kyl says, "Everyone around the corner to the south. I'll be right back." Quickly and with some stealth, Kyl rushes to the stairs' landing opposite the entrance. A rough hobgoblin voice barks something. He places the lantern around the corner and then rushes back to the others. "The light may distract them. From here, we can see the intersection and get the drop on them."

Menno

Menno prepares his crossbow and casts Touch of Fatigue for Benedict to deliver.

"Fly high, hide in shadows and try to stay safe. get behind hobbos. If someone tries to runaway, stop him with this and retreat."

I can grease the area around the door so if they charge they will skitter and fall. The problem is you have to be careful also not to charge too far or you'll fall too. Should I do it?

Menno still speaks in whispers.

Good thinking, Kyl. But I believe they know where we are.

OOC: Deliver touch spells is 3rd level ability, not 2nd, My bad.

Lars waits with shield and axe ready, not wanting to make more noise with his heavy armor before the hobgoblins are close enough to charge. "Let's give them a surprise they'll never forget...." he says quietly.

Hall of Hobgoblins!

Moving at a unhurried pace, five hobgoblins stroll into view. One of them, its attention drawn by the flickering light of the lantern, nudges another and points. Words are spoken, and the hobgoblin nudges shrugs and growls. In these crucial couple of seconds, the party launches its surprise attack.

OOC: Sorry you all waited so long for such a miserable post from me. This turned into an increasingly unpleasant week at work with a rapid influx of several new emotionally disturbed students being added to almost all of my classes. As penance, GM fiat rules the party achieves surprise.

Initiative check and surprise round action, please.

[sblock=Combat Box]
Lars: 2 lethal, 5 nonlethal.
Orinar: 6 nonlethal.
Kyl: uninjured.
Menno: 1 lethal.

Menno greases

Grease on 10' area containing #2, #3 and #4. #1 stays on our side and #5 still didn't enter the area. Followed by fire blast of course

OOC: I'm home on sick leave, cannot access InvisibleCastle, please roll for me (Init +2). I'll try to post regularly in combat, but sometimes will give several rounds of actions just in case.
