[3.5]Cohort and Paladin's Mount

Cedric

First Post
In 3.5, instead of having the really stupid, "summon your paladin's mount from the celestial plane." Is it possible to take the leadership Feat and have a Cohort be your Paladin Mount.

Also, how would this work if you still wanted something vaguely horselike (Celestial Heavy Warhorse?), but you were allowed to have a Cohort up to 9th level?

Would you get a Celestial Heavy Warhorse with extra hit dice to bring it up to 9th level?

Also, this mount/cohort would still have all of the special adjustments you get for a Paladin Mount right? The hd, natural armor...etc?

Thanks for the help...

The option already existed in DotF in 3.0 - you needed to take the Leadership feat if you wanted a dragon as your Paladin's Mount.

And yes, they got all the bonuses for being a mount.

No idea - I was just commenting on the interaction between cohortness and mountiness.

I'm not planning on switching to 3.5, so I don't really know how the whole Pokémount thing works.

Check the 3.5 DMG for options on cohorts for Paladins mounts.

As for people answering 3.5 questions and then saying "I have no clue what I am talking about, I don't know or plan to go to 3.5". Go Away.

Non-horse mounts were not addressed in any detail in the 3.0 Core Rules. They - and cohort-mounts - were given more depth in DotF.

Since a lot of splatbook material has not made it into 3.5 yet, they're still a valid source for ideas, even if they may need tweaking to fit.

My post drawing attention to DotF clearly stated that it was referencing 3.0 material. If non-horse mounts did not receive any particular attention in the 3.5 rules, DotF is still the obvious source for d20 information on non-horse mounts and cohort-mounts.

The information is not counterproductive, and may be of some use if the original poster does not find what he is looking for in the "really stupid, summon your paladin's mount from the celestial plane" 3.5 rules.

I stand by my post. It didn't answer his question directly, but neither was it irrelevant.

The 3.5 DMG section on palaidn mounts is very similar to the DotF rules. The DotF rules are a bit more extensive so they are still worth a look. All these rule are at the DM discretion. So what you are able to do with optional mounts will primarly be up to your DM (or you).

The DMG does not make it clear how the Leadership feat (cohorts) and Paladin's mount stuff work together.

There are some guidlines, however.

1. The CR cannot be more than 3(?) [4(?) if a flying creature] less than the Paladin's level. I don't think this info is in the SRD, so my CR numbers might be wrong.

2. ECL is limited by the Leadership feat, obviously.

Beyond that, the guidlines are pretty thin. I am leaning towards allowing Paladin's mounts be the "extremely rare" type that could have more hit dice than normal if you use the leadership feat as well as the unusual mount rules to get one. The cost of the feat to get a couple of extra hit dice seems appropriate.

If the (regular) Mount is summoned from the Celestial planes, does it have the celestial template, with all the goodies implied? Or does one need to get Leadership and a Cohort that is a true celestial mount? (3.5 question)

No, it does not have the Celestial template. The description of special mounts makes this quite clear. They are magical beasts with only the extra properties mentioned in the special mount section of the Paladin class.

However, no, you do not need the Leadership feat for a celestial mount. That's already covered under the unusual mounts section in the DMG.
