[3.5] Converting Woes...? Ha!

I am making my players convert, well I would if they weren't already doing so of their own volition...

My current group has stayed away from the single level of ranger thing, but my previous group... Barbarian 3/Ranger 1, Rogue 3/Ranger 1,Druid 3/Ranger 1... This out of 6 players! The Cleric, the sorcerer, and the Wizard being the holdout, with the Sorcerer planning on taking a level of ranger at the time the campaign folded.

The Auld Grump, plus I tink that the new ranger is just plain cooler!

The process of conversion isn't difficult, I think -- it's more that some characters will simply change too much, even if the changes make them "superior." For example, there's no doubt in my mind that the revised Druid is FAR more powerful than the 3.0 one; I will retire my Druid character rather than convert, however, because the changes to wildshape drastically change the FLAVOR of my character. I could convert the character sheet in five minutes -- but I don't won't to, because the concept of the character would have to change as well.

I agree with billbo above.

I plan on just letting my players run with their 3.0 PCs and introduce new PCs under 3.5 when the old ones bite the dust !

Eventually any inconsistencies will even out and the transition will be (hopefully) painless.

This is what I don't really understand. Maybe its just how my games and my players work, but I've NEVER seen the mechanics dominate the flavor. The players will do things to keep the flavor, and during all this converting I did with thier help...they had to alter some things, but EVERY change was to keep their character's flavor. :)

A couple of my PCs from various games converted as well as could be hoped for

Human Cleric [Pelor] - Not as uber, but that's OK by me.
Human Sohei/Monk - Need another level of monk to get evasion back. At Least FoB works much better now.
Human Fighter/Rogue/Ghostwalker - MUCH nicer thanks to fighter Intmidiate class skill.
Half-Elf Bard: Too many good changes to list!
Elf Druid/Mystic Wanderer - Even better caster than before!
Human Sorcerer/Rogue - Nerfed Haste hurts his style alot, but at least I can swap out some useless spells. His feats are much more optimized (and Eschew Materials need not be houseruled for sorcs anymore)

So far, any losses I've recieved have been balanced by net gains, but then again, a lot of the classes were the "under optimized" type.
