Uhm, I haven't been injured by the new books at all, but they did try and charge me $106,000.00 at the Wizards store in Southcenter for them.
My girlfriend and I were in the area when she asked me if I wanted to go pick up the DMG and MM at the local Wizards store (my FNGS being totally out of stock or just staffed by people who didn't want my money, it seems.) Anyway, we made our way to the store where I caught site of the display with the new D&D books. Admittedly, I did sort of beeline for them...I think both cashiers commented on just how single minded I was, and several people were concerned enough to inform me that I had missed the PHB. Cairine by my side, we popped down the books, made small-talk with the agreeable Australian cashier, and then just as he rung the books up and asked for the debit card, Cairine looked at the cash register and said Isn't that a bit much for two books?
The total, staring at us in green letters and numbers, was $106,465.17 and we all three just stared for a second. The cashier, Rob according to his name tag, spoke first. Good Gawd , almost dragging God's name out into two syllables, his eyes as large as a character from BESM. Believe me, I wish we had pictures of this. He seemed more freaked out than we were, especially when his co-worker looked over and said Did it ring up that much? I did that!
I'm pretty sure my credit card would have been declined. It may not have been physically damaging, but that total felt like a punch in the nether regions.
After resolving that while I wanted the books I did not want them sufficently to pay for the equivalent of more than 30,000 copies of them, we left the store $65.17 shorter of cash and laughing to ourselves. It's almost anticlimactic to read the books now, honestly.
