Anyone read the new Gust of Wind? They changed it a lot. First they gave it a lot of power, like a strong wind in the environment section. Then, they made it last for a duration (don't remember how long) so the wizard can avoid missile attacks and reduce Listen checks for the time. Then they made all that completely useless because it is a line effect! All any creature has to do is step 5 feet and continue shooting arrows at you!

Incorrect. In 3.0, EBT did not attack anything Small or smaller.

Incorrect. From the 3.0 SRD:

"Each round that a tentacle is not already grappling someone or something, starting the round after it appears, it makes a grapple attack at a random creature or object within 10 feet of it. These attacks take place on the character's turn. The tentacles do not attack each other, nor do they attack objects that are smaller than a Medium-size creature. "

The spell distinguishes between creatures and objects in the first quoted sentence, and then references objects specifically in the third quoted sentence.

I can't imagine any use for the spell as is.

You can, however, make the spell permanent. A castle wall with a permanent Gust of Wind just beyond it would be cool. It'd be un-scalable! :D

Edit to add: Actually, Gust of Wind would be a great spell for a Teleporting mage to use in the same situation. Teleport out, cast Gust of Wind and watch all the scaling ladders topple over, teleport away.

Command now lists just 6 things you can make the target do.

Random Action no longer exists.

I think it's now "Lesser Confusion" and is a Bard only 1st level spell.

Getting rid of pesky fog magic.

Knocking over goblins, kobolds, rabid halflings, and other Small foes.

Push back flying Medium foes.

Damaging and dispersing swarms.

Extinguish flames (or fan large flames).

Not too bad for a second level spell, especially if the user is creative. ("I don't have fly, but I can cast levitate on you and then blow you across the chasm with a gust of wind...")

It's a heck of a lot better than it was at 3rd level. It was the lamest 3rd level spell ever.

Not if you're in a 5' wide corridor. :)

Note that a line area is actually 10 feet wide (more or less), not 5. It affects the squares on both sides of the line. (see the description on PHB 175/176).

Lightning bolt is a 120' line, rather than an area of 5' wide out to Medium range or an area of 10' wide out to half Medium range.

This is a change to the way the spell has worked all the way from 1st edition (you've always been able to cast it in 5' wide or 10' wide versions), simply to configure it for table top play and to use the new "area of effect" called "line" (which was already in 3.0E anyway - dragon breath weapons anyone?).

Did anyone ever use the 5' wide version of lightning bolt? Now that fireball doesn't fill a volume and therefore is perfectly OK to use in confined spaces, and has a Long range, why would anyone use lightning bolt (apart from those times when you come up against fire resistant critters)?

I'm house-ruling lightning bolt back to its 3.0E area.

Cheers, Al'Kelhar
