D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Noteworthy spell changes

Call Lightning

Call Lightning is now completly awesome. The casting time has gone down from 10mintues to 1 round and a bolt can be cast each round with area effect!

Additionally, you'd have to assume that "The subject's strength score cannot..." should be "this spell cannot cause the subject's strength score to..."

That's not what it says, though :)

Oh, and from my reading of blade barrier, it now doesn't actually occupy an area - it has a 'thickness' of zero, and you're either
a) passing through it
b) not passing through it

you can't be sitting in it.

... unless you have a face greater than 5'x5'. If Blade Barrier sits on the border of a square, an ogre can occupy squares on both sides of the barrier at the same time...

That somehow reminds me of that mafia boss who had enemies everywhere in the town.... here an arm, there a leg, here a head...

Here's another small one I noticed that will have an interesting impact.

'Continual Flame' is no longer an Illusion. It's Evocation[Light].

Which means, if I understand the descriptions in the darkness spells correctly, a 'Heightened Continual Flame' (to, say, 4th level) provides illumination in areas of 'Deeper Darkness'

Re: Call Lightning

I'm not so sure about the "awesome" bit. It's a lot like an empowered Flaming Sphere that takes a standard action to direct instead of an MEA. I'm sure it has it's uses but "awesome" isn't the first word that springs to mind.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the rather gigantic difference between the last sentence of Call Lightning in 3.0 and 3.5.

I'm talking about the books btw, not the SRD.:D

... and has been since the 3.0 PHB Errata :)

Since figments cannot "illuminate darkness", it was a necessary change. A torch that casts no light isn't much of a torch.

Yeah. Control Winds + Call Lightning Storm is going to be a favorite of mine, I know. Both are powerful spells. Both are even better together.

If there's a moderate wind (11-20 mph), you can, as a level 9 caster, make yourself immune to ranged weapon attacks, blow away small or smaller creatures (knocked prone and rolled around, taking non-lethal damage), knock down medium creatures, and keep up to huge creatures from approaching you. Then, calmly, cast Call Lightning Storm, and deal down round after round of 5d10 electric death.

Hypersmurf, a question? Control Weather has a Fort save...do I use the fort save for the spell, or the ones listed in the DMG? Thanks!

Control Weather had no save in 3.0, and I'm afraid the 3,5 books haven't even arrived in this country yet, so I'd have to do some SRD browsing. I'm sure someone with the books will have an idea...
