[3.5 Revision Spotlight] The Gnome

Hmmm...This revision is quite drastic. 3.5e is begining to look like 4e if you ask me. I don't know if 3.5e will be nearly as "backwards compatible" as WotC claims.

They couldn't just say "Bard or Illusionist", nooo....

So much for their "don't change it if you don't have to" philosophy for 3.5.

Gnomes can still be illusionist like they always were. Now you can multiclass him into a bard if you wish with no penalties.

Besides, gnome = gnosis = knowledge = bardic lore.
Gnomes are the keepers of the lost knowledge. This works.

Well, sort of. Bardic Lore doesn't cover lost knowledge. It's actually a hodgepodge of general knowledge. As explained by the Sage, Skip Williams, the DC of a bardic knowledge check is actually based on how commonly known the information sought after is. Thus, specific facts that have been long forgotten by the general public are best covered by an actual knowledge skill.

But the bard gets those too, so that aspect of the bard favored class still works.

The part that's hard to swallow is the charisma-related aspect. trying to push them off as rakish charmers and golden-throated crooners.

No, it isn't. Drastic would be changing the nature of Feats, or Attacks of Opportunity. Drastic is changing a thing that has reprecussions throughout the rules system, that is intrinsic enough to be difficult to change.

This is peripheral. A DM can quite easily say, "I don't want it to be bard, I want it to be illusionist" and *Whammo!* it is done and nobody so much as flinches.

For those of you who think changing the Gnome's favored class from Illusionist to Bard is a bad thing, please take a step back, and look at just how little a specialist Wizard gains from his specialty... a +2 spellcraft bonus to learn spells from his chosen school, and one extra spell per day from that school.

That really doesn't seem like much of a specialty in Illusions, now does it? Most illusionist specialists I've played with are essentially ordinary wizards with an extra handful of Illusion spells. Their primary spells are still Magic Missiles and Fireballs.

The fundamental difference between a Bard's spell list and a Wizard's spell list will make more of a difference than any Wizard's specialty school. Now their spellist will consist almost entirely of Illusions and Enchantments. Take the feat Spell Focus (Illusion), and they are every bit the illusionists they used to be.

"Elves can be any kind of Wizard... Why can't we?"

I like it! It's about time Gnomes got there own favored class, instead of a limited version of the Elf's. Having the Gnome favored class be Wizard(Illusionist), was like having the the Dwarven favored class be Fighter(Axeman).

No, it isn't. In fact, it stinks on ice.

But note that disliking gnomes having a favored class of bard isn't the same thing as approving of their lame illusionist favored class.

Personally, I thought full-blown wizard was the way to go, alond with an Int. bonus in place of Con.

Then again, I'm also for giving evles a Cha. bonus and making their favored class sorcerer.

*shrug*

You're right. It isn't the same.

Fortunately, I wasn't talking about disliking bard as their favored class, I was talking about people who wanted to keep the favored class as Illusionist. So to a point, we agree... Specialist Wizard classes as favored classes stink.

btw- Does anyone else think that the Iconic Gnome, Gimble looks like the gnome from the SciFi TV Show - Special Unit 2?

Wouldn't know anything about that, I'm afraid, but he's eerily reminiscent of my own 3e gnome bard character, created over two years ago. Right down to the boots and long red coat.

You hear me, WotC? I'm onto you, so stay outta my head!
