3.5 Scoops Discussion

D&D 3.0 has done very well for our group. I think what we're going to see is a lot of people that use 3.0/3.5 hybrids. There's some changes in 3.5 I wouldn't dream of using (new Spell Focus) and others that I can't imagine being without (new Ranger class). Maybe I'm wrong, but I think a lot of groups will be doing the same.

What, never saw a cynical gamer before? :)

It's the same kind of discussion I'm seeing in my own gaming group. "Hey, this new power attack is great! I love 3.5e!" "Oh, wait, they're nerfing disintegrate - that's stupid, so let's ignore it!"

I don't quite understand the need to start house ruling before you even start playing the game. See if everything fits together before pulling it apart...

Depends on the gorup, I've seen people complain about powerups just as much as the powerdowns.

And I'll add while I don't see the need to be inflexible in an absolute dislike of something without seeing the whole, and maybe playing it a bit, I also don't see the need to kiss a new rules butt before seeing the whole and seeing it in play.

I just kind of figure everyone has an invisble added line to every post that says. "this is my impression with the info given, but upon seeing everything my opinion may change." It's an implied duh comment to the end of every post that I just don't expect everyone to type in every freakin post, cause that would get really tedious.

Ok if I'm playing an Enchanter (12th lvl) and have Necromancy and Divination as my prohibited schools and I take a lot of time and money adding spells from all the other schools to my spellbook.
I try to use some spells from each schools and then my DM switch to 3.5, now I have to drop Divination and loose a set of spells that I use and scribe on my spellbook.

Backward compatibility my a..
When I saw the change to Haste I think, ok there'll be a lot of Sorcerer upsets around that now have a spell they could think it's not what they want, then I read that a Sorcerer can swap spells so they cover that problem. But I cannot get why this change to the specialization.

Here is an example where you take the power up and ignore the power down.

I'm with you. If we switch (it's up to the rest of my group, who can be miserly about that kind of thing), I'm pretty sure it will be more 3.25e than 3.5e.

I wonder how much market splintering this will cause? Obviously, WotC is betting that the changes are small enough & the network externalities strong enough to hold the D&D/d20 market together. It probably is, I imagine; but, boy, if it isn't, ouch.

i'll play 3.11ed for Workgroups. but after looking at the changes i can only keep repeating myself.

Original D&D (1974) is the only true game. All the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing.:D

FWIW, I am dubious about power attack, and I don't like the new disintigrate because if I wanted to roll that many dice, I'd be playing exalted.

So are we not allowed to discuss it, either? Like I said in the druid thread, I will wait to pass judgement until I see the spell list. Likewise, I'll wait to pass judgement on power attack until I see if there are other feats that leave a reason in the world to play with a sword & shield.

But everythng is subject to strutiny. This design team has not shown me that they are up to the task of this big of an edition, and I can already see from the school specialization thing that they did not live up to their "backwards compatability" promises. (What am I supposed to do with my conjurer that barred evocation?)

I'm just going to chime in here with one things no one has mentioned: I bought Ghostwalk the other day, and noticed no warping of the cover, so it looks like the covers for the 3.5e books should also be fine...

Pick another barred school, and mark off some spells, I guess.

(I recommend that, before the campaign changes, the conjurer make as many magic items as he can that are based on the spells he'll be losing. ;) )

I never said that. We're all free to post our opinions. The action of posting an opinion doesn't necessarily assume the suggestion that other opinions are barred.

I do agree with you that there is a lot more changing than they originally promised. This will make conversion more difficult for many.
