Combat Reflexes.

He should also find a way (friendly buff, take a wizard level, magic item) to increase a size category and double his reach.
Combat Reflexes is useless, actually, since you don't threaten (even adjacent enemies!) with a whip.

Improved Disarm is handy if your campaign is humanoid-heavy.

I like Imp Disarm with Whips. Reminds me of that DEVO music video/old cowboy films where they use the whip to flick a cigarette out of someone's mouth.

A one level dip in the Lasher Prc from Sword and Fist (3.0 but the PRC was not updated so, meh.) Allows you to make Aoos with your whip but only at 5 feat, it also lets you deal lethal damage with a whip.

If you are against using 3.0 material the Crimson Scourge prc from city scape lets you deal lethal damage with non-lethal weapons without the -4 penalty.

A one level dip in pyrokineticist from Expanded Psionics handbook gives you the ability to manifest a whip made of fire as a move action. Bonus cool points right there, cannot be disarmed, lethal damage (although it is fire damage, pretty easy to resist).

Those are a few things off the top of my head, i am AFB at the moment though, i'll dig around when i get home from school.

Whips look cool in the movies. In 3.5 they're slightly less than useless.

I say that because they not only can't do diddly, they occupy a hand that could be wielding an actual weapon.

It's treated like a missile weapon, in that it doesn't threaten any area and provokes AoO to use, but it has the worst range of any ranged weapon in the game.

It does no damage at all to anyone or anything with a +1 to their armor, or any Natural Armor at all.

And, you can't actually use it for any of the neat movie stunts. No way to wrap it around a beam and swing from it, can't use it to grab things and draw them to you.

So my best advice? Find a new neat-looking weapon.

There better things that they wiped off the models in that video, like women's undergarments.

As far as the question goes: If you allow to use the Arms and Equipment Guide, look up the Mighty Whip, Dagger-whip and Mighty Dagger-whip.
Mighty whip: you are allowed to add you strenght modifier to damage
Dagger-whip: 1d6 damage, same advantages of the normal whip and less limits. Armor does not limit the damage you do.
Mighty Dagger-whip: a Dagger-whip that you can add you strength modifier to.
