One of the more interesting changes in 3.5E came to my attention on Sunday. My sunday campaign is a relatively low-level affair (PCs range from 2nd to 4th level), and includes a novice player. Thus, I've been running some fairly basic dungeon scenarios.
Into one of the rooms of the dungeon I placed some Zombies. Everyone knows Zombies - tough, slow, annoying. 3.5E makes three changes from the 3E version.
First, they're now templated. (This also applies to skeletons). The new zombie loses most of the abilities of the base creature, but there is just enough individualism left to make two 'medium' zombies unalike.
Second, they gained Damage Reduction. Not a lot, just DR 5/slashing. This proved quite amusing on Sunday, as I neglected to inform my players of this. The first successful attack on a zombie was with a spear. DR kicked in. A scimitar attack missed. Then a club was tried... no effect. A scimitar attack missed. The players began to complain.
(Eventually, they worked it out.)
Finally, they are now EVIL!!! I really like this - the forces of unlife are animating them, and it has a game effect.
Skeletons changed similarly. We knew about the DR 5/bludgeoning, but they're also EVIL and TEMPLATED.
The basic Human warrior skeletons are interesting - using scimitars with critical ranges of 18-20.
One error crept in to the Zombie's description, though. Remember that DR 5/slashing? Well, it's not mentioned as something they gain in the template description. Hmm. (Both in the MM and the SRD).
Regardless of that, I'm fully in support of the changes to the Zombie and the Skeleton. Some classic creatures are made more interesting to my mind.
How do you feel about it?
Cheers!
