[3.5E] Weapon Familiarity!

I have nothing against a superiour exotic weapon - I am against yet another uber elven weapon.

Well, OK, but if it follows the standards rules for an exotic weapon, which the thinblade does, then it's not "uber".

I have sufferred through 2E's uber-elven-anythings, and will not go through that again, not in my games.

I shouldn't have to explain to anyone that D&D is largely inspired by Tolkein's work, and I suspect there also need be no exposition on where elves stood in relation to dwarves, humans, halflings, etc, in terms of racial benefits...fact is, elves in D&D have been a mere shadow of their literary antecedents. Heck, try them in WarHammer sometime...

I'm always slightly perplexed and greatly aggrivated by the attitude that because some character option in 2e either sucked (clerics) or ruled (elves), that makes it OK for them to be broken, imbalanced, shafted, or front-loaded in 3e. All racial and class choices should have their appeal. If there's a "dwarven waraxe", why not an "elven thinblade"?

If you can get an exotic weapon (and rightly superiour to normal martial weapons) for free just for being an elven fighter, ranger etc., then it is an elven uber weapon.

And Tolkien never wrote for a balanced game setting, so I feel free to ignore anything he wrote about elves that does not suit my game. I do not want a tolkienesque "superrace" in my games - at least not for PCs.

And elves are not shafted in 3E, not at all. With all the elven subraces cropping up they are already some of the best choices from a purely statistical point of view for a great many classes.

Again, I have nothing against the elven thinblade (apart from the name) - as long as elves don't get it for free (or as a martial weapon), making it clearly superiour to the longsword and any other sword, especially the rapier, for any elven fighter.

Yep, that's utter crap, but like I've said, that's not an elf thing, that's a WF thing.

No, but someone felt obliged to respect the antecedents. Not that I ever thought elven uberness was a problem (human racial suckage was).

The core elven racial racial package is not well-designed, but yes those FE elves are off the ol' chain....

Understood. I think we are in agreement.
