3.X Petition

Grognard comes from the french word for "grumbler" and orginally meant all those hardcore veterans from Napoleons army who where constantly murmuring "he´ll come back and then we´ll show you."
Over time, it became the pop culture expression for all those people who staunchly defend a niche part of a hobby, sometimes with Dragonsfootesque fervor. Regarding to hobbyists, it´s more often used for old-school tabletop wargamers, however.

Honestly, I wasn't really being sarcastic.
Sorry for the misunderstanding then.

Just so those who didn't like the wording on the petition's main page know, I wrote to the page's creator and he reworded it (taking some suggestions from me). Evidently English isn't his native language.

Not much can be done about those who signed the petition and added some anti-4th edition sentiments. All I can say is that wanting 3.X to stick around doesn't necessarily mean that you are rabidly anti-4th edition. With WotC dominating the market, 4th edition is bound to do extremely well for itself. It would just be nice to have an alternative...

I recommend something much more effective than a petition, though. You want publishers to keep making 3e-compatible products? then vote with your wallet. Go, right now and every month between now and the end of next year, and buy 3.5 pdfs and published books. the only way publishers will keep producing is if people are buying... so show them you're willing to do so.

This is correct.

I'm still purchasing 3.5 products and will still do so in the future.

Yep, me too. I just bought a butt-load of Kalamar stuff from the Kenzerco sale. Of course, I'm leaning more towards using it with 4e, but it's too soon to tell for sure just yet.

(which, I agree, could be a little off-putting to those who don't get the "points of light" joke).

There are those of us that get it, and still don't find it amusing, since the "mood" of the site seems aimed at causing further division between 4e and 3e fans.

I've bought more 3.0/3.5e products in the past four months than I have at any time since the third edition hit the shelves. Kenzer & Co. (Kalamar), Green Ronin (Thieves' World) and Fantasy Flight Games (Dawnforge, Midnight) have all received the bulk of my business because of their massive sales, but I've also picked up Conan: The Roleplaying Game, 2nd Edition from Mongoose Publishing, Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk and a handful of Forgotten Realms supplements from WotC.

This is super good advice. I guess that shouldn't be surprising, because Piratecat's always full of it... Good advice, that is.

I should be getting lots of 3.X and AD&D stuff for Christmas and, best of all, I just scored the last city of Ptolus: City by the Spire from Thoughthammer.com for $84.99. Woo Hoo!!!!

And the word I've been hearing is that d20/D&D products are moving as slow as molasses overall (with a handful of exceptions). If that's true then it certainly doesn't bode well for those hoping for loads of new 3.5 material.

I've said before, if I decide that 4E isn't for me I'm going to virtually stop buying d20/D&D gaming supplements. I'll pick up accessories (things like Paizo's Flip-Mats & Item Cards and WotC's dungeon tiles), fluff heavy Eberron supplements and the rare 3.5 d20 book that is clearly amazing. Other than that I'll stick with what I have.

What I hear makes me pretty sure I'll go 4E. Still, I have a plan if I decide it's not right for me.

As for my supporting 3.X, I have been all along and will keep my Paizo Pathfinder subscription until they convert to 4th edition. I have little interest in buying pdfs but would be happy to buy quality any 3.X products that are released.
Paizo is just one of hundreds of companies producing 3.5 material. Supporting one company is hardly going to get the rest to keep on cranking out the 3E material.

Goodman Games, Necromancer Games, Expeditious Retreat Press and a host of awesome PDF publishers are waiting to hear from you. If they don't, you can petition all you want, but they'll be dropping 3E like a hot rock.
