It seems that, among the players and groups I know personally, there was much more reluctance to switch from AD&D 1e and 2e to D&D 3e than there has been to switch from D&D 3x to D&D 4e.

Now isn't that funny? My experiences have been different. Yes there was a reluctance to switch from 1E to 2E. No reluctance from 2E to 3E and even more reluctance from 3E to 4E (more so than the switch from 1E to 2E I dare say), but this has been my experience and is not an accurate sample of what's happening out there. I guess it's just different wherever you go. The groups I have been involved in during my 20+ years of playing D&D have come and gone but I have been cognizant of their reactions to the edition changes.

We played 3e and have recently shifted over to Pathfinder. One player also plays in a 4e game, and another player has tried 4e but didn't like it. The rest of us have either not even looked at the 4e books or bought the books but decided 4e was not for them. So, no schism.

3e didn't cause a schism, and 4e won't.

The current plan for our group is to wrap up our current WFRP game, then for me to run three 4e stand-alone adventures (probably at 1st, 5th and 12th level), and then see how we feel. The dominant expectation in the group is that it's probably not for us: I have deep doubts about the game, and my players are rather less receptive to it than even myself. That said, I am determined to at least give the game a fair assessment.

If the group collectively like the game, we'll play it going forward; if not then we won't. No big deal. (If it's split down the middle, it's probably my call - I mostly have carte blanche when selecting the games I'm going to run.)

The game that looks like being a little problematic is Star Wars Saga Edition, which is slated as the system for our next full campaign (after the 4e trial). Myself and three of the players have been looking forward to it for some time, but we've just had a new player join the group who really hates Star Wars d20, and has indicated that he'd rather sit out this campaign. That's fair enough, he said he'd be back for the game after that - but I'm not 100% certain I wouldn't prefer not to have a player sitting out for what is likely a matter of some months. For the moment, I'm hopeful he might be persuaded to at least give the system a chance.

No, there is always some initial reluctance (from all of us) because we inevitably have games going on in the newly obsoleted edition, but ultimately we tend to go where the game takes us, and it hasn't let us down.

Well, I collected the group I play with now to play 3e, so no problems there.

And converting to 4e? There's one player who's sceptical, but he's the casual player who doesn't really have the time to learn new rules, and I'm certain we'll win him over when he has a few more 4e games under his belt - his main concern is that he finds the new rules too complicated, which I take as unfamiliarity.

What I am interested in is if 3e caused the same kind of in-group schisms that 4e seems to be causing.
Not in my experience. I've played every edition of the game, and I never saw any significant resistance to a new edition until 4E.

Others apparently recall things quite differently.

Shockingly no schisms in my groups, everyone is staying with C&C. Which I am glad to say since I like all of them, and I have also decided against switching to 4E.

The only edition change in D&D that caused a schism was when we switched from BECM D&D to AD&D 2nd, which led to one player walking out of the group. We're losing one as we make the switch from 3.5 to 4, but that's nothing to do with the edition change.

we just started a test campaign for 4e,
I have one player who may not stay if we stay with it.
when 3e came out I did a little happy dance and dropped my 2e core books into a storage box. There was no contest at all.

We are starting to play around with 4E now. Some of us are not feeling the love of the new edition but that's not going to keep us from playing together. This is a funny topic to me because I can't imagine not getting together with friends and having fun because of a rule set. 4E isn't my favorite, so what? Is that worth not sitting around the table with buddies of 10 to 20 years, rolling dice and munching on junk food?

When my turn comes to run it will be a different system but the experience will still be the same.
