Its all about the roleplaying there are no edition/system schisms, I find the whole thing laughable myself, the only reason a schism would happen would be if one player detested another player and that ain't gonna happen as we're all friends playing a game having fun.

To clarify my answer

3e brought me back to D&D, having wandered away from it in the mid nineties.
For the record, I moved across the country just a few months before 4e came out. The group I was playing with is not moving over to 4e, and is utterly uninterested in it (I believe they're playing WFRP now), and my 3.x/house blend game is going here with people who've never played 3x before - I've got the 4e books but we're not playing it right now.
So far as I know, of all of the gamers I know (and that's plenty) no one else that plays D&D is terribly interested in converting. Which surprises me.

My group started as a HERO System group. 3E brought them back to D&D and we have alternated between the two systems since then. 4E has not interested our group at all. After our current 3.5 campaign, which will take awhile, we will move on to another supers campaign for another while. It will likely be at least a year and a half before we move on again. At that point we may move to Pathfinder but it is way to early to say at this point (So far myself and another trendsetter in our group have read and like Pathfinder). For now at least we are happy with our our 3.5 Ptolus campaign and no schism will happen till at least we finish our future supers campaign.

Our 3E group disintegrated, and I re-formed a 4E group with some newbies and veterans from the 3E group. The adamant non-switchers stay home and play WoW on game night, now, and they are no longer involved with PnP gaming.

4e would only cause a schism in that I'd be finding a different group if I was hellbent on running 4e.
This is the current situation in my group.

So: No schism in 3e, no attempt to convert to 4e (and the players are united in their lack of interest).

No "schizms" with either change.

Hey check it out, they came out with 3e, it has a bunch ofstuff added to the game that seems cool. Want to try?

Sure.

Even the switch from 3e to 3.5 didn't really cause much of a stir. Despite "Thats annoying they changed and didn't change it that much... And so quickly... I don't feel like buying new stuff." "I do."

We ended up playing 3.25 incorporating some 3.5 some 3e... It was fun.

D&D is fun. RPGs are fun.

No schism in my group. We have all looked at 4E and reactions ranged from "I wouldn't mind playing it, but I'm not interested in switching without a group to fall into" to "I'll never touch this steaming pile of crap". So I would say we fall into "3.X did not cause a schism, and 4.0 won't because we won't attempt to convert."

I'd given up D&D before 3E came out, so no schism there. From 3->4: I've got 1.5 players in my group that I know aren't interested (either for now or forever). That's cool: We still play our 3.5 Savage Tide game. The rest of our group is also playing 4E. I wouldn't call it a schism more than an amicable split.

When 3e came out, it was a dramatic and wonderful departure from 2e. Universally accepted.

When 4e came out, I didn't really have a group at the time. My current group is not that interested in it, but that hasn't kept me from playing with them (My love for 4e has not diminished my enjoyment of the other systems).
