I like this analogy. Being a 3e fan and a huge baseball fan,while I dislike both 4e and football quite a bit, it makes the world make sense again for me.

Personally I very much prefer the NFL to MLB as a spectator sport, but would rather participate in a pick up baseball game than a pick up football game. In DnD I very much enjoy playing 3.X and yet I am still quite on the fence about the longterm enjoyment of 4E.

Personally I don't really think it's a good premise unless your really trying to say that like baseball and football, 3.X and 4E are two totally and completely different games. While the former is certainly true the latter doesn't really fly for me because during actualy game play 4E still feels like DnD to me (a different flavor of DnD but still DnD).
