3e with 1-10 level spread Forked Thread: Changeover Poll

Ah yes, high level play...

For starters, the good old list of problematic spells can be found here.

You will want to get rid of Gate, Planar Binding, and Scry. Flight and other Travel spells need to be higher level. Divinations need to have fail chances and Rope Trick should be 10 min/lvl to cut down the abuse. Also, consider introducing mundane solutions to magical problems (lead blocks teleportation).

In general, you want to remove one of the following from the spellcasting sphere - the ability to take out multiple opponents at once, the ability to operate in several places at once, or the ability to gather exceptional intelligence without external or unreliable sources. It should be okay if they can do two of the three but the trinity gives you NO room for error.

And for some more general advice, if you want combat to run faster, use lower level opponents in greater number. Seriously, the demographics don't support all of these equally high level opponents so don't over use them. Why waste a good CR 15 monster when 4(?) CR 11 monsters will do?

Whoa. That's quite an exhaustive list. Thanks for the link.

You may be interested (or may not) to know that many of your suggestions seem to have been incorporated in 4e with regards to the spell list. For example, they seriously ramped up the spell level of the "travel" spells, and ramped up/nerfed many of the divination spells (which you label as 'DM').

You see, I think 4e did an excellent job of revising the spell list. Had they not also changed the way spells are cast or removed the versatility of the wizard, they may have been able to encourage other folks to pick up 4e. As it stands, the list is balanced...but the list is short, and the options are severely curtailed. Perhaps an entirely different discussion.

Thanks for the link, again - I bookmarked it and, should I tread back into 3e (likely using S'mon's 1-10 spread), I intend to use it.

I always wanted to give Clerics, Druids, Sorcerers and Wizards a bard's spell progression and then continue 7th-9th level spell acquisition from there.
However, I was never sure what to give them in return for the delayed progression.
