3rd Party Poopers

To be fair, a DM does not have to allow the use of a supplement he or she does not own.
Hey, I'm not saying a DM has to allow anything but Core, anything the DM doesn't own, etc. I'm just making the observation.

If you know your players, and know what they like to play, take away their security blanket and give them things that take it in a new direction.
But I don't know my players. The longest I have played with the same people is several months. So it's a constant battle of finding new people, new groups.

Some of them have not and never will play anything but D&D. Not even other FRPGs. I'm not talking about n00bs, either- I've gamed with at least one since 1985.
Oh yeah, I know how that is.

I tend to distrust the mechanics behind 3pp splatbooks. I bought several during the initial d20 bubble, and was generally disappointed... While WotC products can have their own balance issues, I think they tend to have a lot fewer, along with higher general production values...
Four words: Book of Exalted Deeds.

My God, WotC made a parade of broken.

For the most part, I'm not as interested in the mechanics as I am the fluff, and the "This is just not vanilla". It took WotC a long while to make things like the Binder, the Dread Necromancer, the Beguiler, etc; those have really fun fluff and fill different niches. They're different, and fill certain desires; before the Dread Necromancer popped up, I'd have liked to use this here 3PP book all about necromancy, for instance.

Seriously, take them out of their comfort zone. If they're too scared of a different flavor of magical imaginary being, you can always go back or work out some sort of accommodation (sure, you can play a halfling, but you are the only one in existence, and you were sold to the circus by your destitute human parents). But no one gained much of anything in boring-old Samesville.
This can work with some groups, but you should consider making the accomodation first, before making huge changes. The DM is not the only one at the table, and while I believe the DM should get a bigger say than any player, he is not a dictator.

I know that if a DM told me that I don't know if I'll like something until I've tried it, I would feel rather condescended to. That's the sort of thing parents do with young children. If you pull it on a 35-year-old with kids and a mortgage, you might get a bad reaction.

That is to say, if the players like to play a certain way, it could be because they actually prefer to play that way, not becuase they're too scared to try something else.

Trying new stuff is awesome! If that's what the group wants to do.

Chimes in, off-topic, wonders where 3pp went wrong and wishes someone would make a decent video game under the D&D franchise. berates Dannyalcatraz for his lack of originality.

... wait, this ins't the Meta-Troll thread? :)

[On topic] For the better part of decade, I have had but one player in my group. We alternate campaign worlds, create new characters and new stories, and generally have a good time. I prefer to delve in 3pp and find all sorts of campaign worlds that I would love to run, but I have a tendency to want to try the Next Big Thing and each world I DM tends to be 'new' and unrelated to the last great campaign. My player, otoh, prefers to cherry-pick from various 3pp but generally sticks to his (ever-growing) homebrew world.

In short, we both run the kind of worlds we'd like to actually play in, and as such, we sell each other short in a lot of ways. He prefers more streamlined, traditional D&D; I prefer D&D at its later period(s), with steampunk, renaissance or even some sci-fi elements thrown in for good measure. While they're fun at the time, I get bored of the 'typical' fantasy world, and he isn't into the same 'weirdness' that I am. Further, I like to play with the crunch side of things at times while he prefers to just wing whatever he feels is appropriate, rules-be-damned.

As such, I have a mountain of PURE AWESOME 3pp that, for lack of a better reason, i will only ever introduce as a DM, because anything I intorduce into his world may not fit with his world vision.
