4 PCs, no leader

We're about to convert my campaign to 4th Edition, and our first session with the new characters should be tonight.

In 3.5, they were a tiefling shadowcaster, a bariaur ranger, a githzerai dual-wielding fighter, and a human mystic theurge.

In 4E, they're a tiefling fey warlock, a bariaur archery ranger, a githzerai one-handed fighter, and a human wizard with two cleric multiclass feats.

What sorts of tactics should they use to offset their lack of a leader role?

  • Seek self-healing opportunities (the fighter has definitely done this).
  • Focus fire on enemy controllers to end that threat before negative status effects get laid on them.
  • Run and hide.

Are their feats set in stone at this point?

It might be worthwhile for the fighter (the most likely to qualify) to take the Student of Battle feat -- use of the warlord's Inspiring Word power once per day may not seem like it's worth the feat, but anything that gives additional access to Healing Surges will hardly go to waste...

Use hit-and-run tactics. Sometimes your group won't be able to last a whole fight and will need to get away, find somewhere safe, take a short rest, use the healing surges, and then try to get the back guys again. You are low on healing-in-combat, and that will hurt.
