The d20 version of Traveller (which has been "about to come out now" for about 6 months) is going to be about $45. But, it will also be GIGANTIC.

It's going to be 445 pages long, and includes complete vehicle and starship design mechanics, psionics and so forth. It's almost all crunchy, with little fluff. They had to cut out a lot of the setting material so all the crunchy bits would fit.

So if you are a Sci-Fi fan it should be worth the money.

I would pay this because it is about 3-5 books if compared to the D&D (both WOTC and 3rd party) system. I hate buying a space game and not having vehicles, races, weapons etc. It makes the game worthless.

Heh, was just going over it today and T20 will actually be 464 pages for $44.95. The index, glossary, forms, etc. kicked it over the previously expected 448 pages once we got it layed out. (Yes we are at the FINAL stages, and expect it to go to the printer on Friday!)

I agree that 39.99 is kind of a tough price to break. You better offer something substantial (like what T20 appears to offer, for example).

Our monster book Tome of Horrors has over 400 monsters and is 330 pages long and is 29.95.

The one thing we might do that could break 40 is the Judges Guild Wilderlands Boxed Set that has 18 full sized maps and two softbound books in a boxed set. It is slated for 39.95 (but that might change, though I really dont want to break 39.95).

hardly! i should know, i led the charge against the call for high prices - virtually alone. it was a flamefest, though, against me! just about everyone who chimed in seemed to forget which side of the counter they were on and couldn't tell ryan fast enough how they wanted him to double their prices. i don't know if it was just a bunch of people being starstruck or what, but i couldn't believe that only 1 or 2 people stood up to that nonsense.

it was shameful, to be quite frank.

What I was referring to was the 'elite' products that RyanD briefly described.

I don't think (although Ryan might) that any product brought out to date even comes close to this level.

If its just a price increase on already exisitng products (or new-content-same-style type stuff) then $40 is probably about the reasonable limit any publisher is going to use for these books and supplements.

At least it is with me (see someone does agree with you! And its me you lucky dog ;) ).

But I would still be interested in this 'new level' of product and what could justify the (apparently) much higher price. Of course we could be years (or never) away from this stuff (watever form it may take).

Dancey said that the D&D target audience is college undergrads, which are 18-22 years of age. Check the EN World archives and the WOTC market survey.
I don't care what he say's! He may be a very important player in the DnD world, but the facts are right there in front of YOU! The new Issue of Dragon will be shrink wrapped, WHY.... some adult content ? No WOTC target "audience" is anyone with money!!!!!!!! DO NOT FOOL YOURSELF!!! By the why wasn't he (Mr. Dancey) talking awhile back about some sort "Elitist" "over-the-top" DnD merchandice that he would like to see marketed upwards of $300 or so???!!!! Check the EN World archives. No offence Corinth, but you are following flawed logic! The proof IS IN THE STORES. And not in what some one says or wishes.

Which is mosty college kids. I'm not sure what you mean by "proof is in the stores". You might want to refrain using caps as it does nothing to help your point.

Dancey did extensive market research. If he knows anything, it's the RPG market.

Besides, Corinth said the target audience was people 18-22. That's who WotC targeted. You may not agree with it, but it's a fact. Has the target audience changed since Dancey parted ways with WotC? Maybe. But that was the audience at least until he finally left.

By the way, you might want to tone down the caps and exclamation points; it comes off as yelling, which seems rather aggressive and not conducive to a friendly discussion.
