4CtF question

Storminator

First Post
I just picked up 4CtF, and I don't understand one of the tables in it.

Table 8-1 (1) has
Code:
                 Modern Fantasy
Name Cost Cost Multiple?
Alternate Form 3(1) 3(1) n/a

as its header and first entry. Can anyone explain the parenthesis and the "Multiple" column?

The first two entries are how much the power costs in a modern or fantasy game. The first cost in each column is how much a PC needs to pay for the ability, the cost in parentheses is how much it costs if you just buy it for a one-use NPC or monster. For instance, if a monster has regeneration, it might heal 20 or 30 points of damage in a single combat before the PCs kill it, but if a PC has regeneration, he'll heal hundreds of points of damage throughout his career, so the ability is more useful to him.

The third column, Multiple, is there to say whether you can just take the ability twice and have it stack, or if there's special rules for improving the power. For instance, Heightened Ability Score lets you just keep buying the same effect over and over again; 3 HrP gets you +2, 6 HrP gets you +4, 9 HrP gets you +6, etc. On the other hand, something like the Create Object power is more complicated, and you have to buy different enhancements; you can't just buy the same enhancement over and over again.

So if it says Multiple - yes, you can know that you can just buy it as many times as you want, stacking costs and effects. If it says n/a, like it does here, improving the ability is not so simple.
