D&D 4E 4E = BadWrongFun

First Post
Why are there so many posts along the lines of "I've heard that in 4E Sockpuppets will be a PC race. I have lost all faith in humanity. I have ripped my eyes from their sockets and am now typing by brail. With my dying breath I lay my curse against anyone who shall every play a Sockpuppet!"

I can understand being upset if an option you liked was removed (although all signs point to missing races/classes being introduced later.) But why the hatred for new options? If you don't like it don't use it. If you're DMing and don't want it in your world, rule 0 it. Otherwise, why does it ruin your life to know that someone, somewhere is having fun doing something you don't want to do?

For the same reason there are so many posts which say "Sockpuppets are the greatest innovation in gaming evar, I wuv you WotC you roxxorz my world, here take all my money it's all good I didn't need it anyway".

I personally love the idea of having tieflings in the core books. It is a twisted, dark character concept. it's up to the DM to simply nix in his campaign if he doesn't approve.

Ignoring the hyperbole on both sides, the negativity is very different from the positivity. The negativos are free to ignore the new edition if they don't think it will be fun; 3rd edition doesn't suddenly cease to exist when 4th edition comes out. The positivos are excited for the new edition, but if 4th edition were not to come out, their fun would be diminished.

4th edition means both types can have fun; those who want a new edition, and those who don't (since older editions can still be played). Without 4th edition, one of these groups will not have fun.

If Sockpuppets are in as a playable race does that mean Banjo is in as part of the default pantheon? :p

The most extreme post I've seen in favour of 4e has been along the lines of "I'm really looking forward to 4e. It's very exciting." The most extreme post against is:

Oh my god. Those dragons look horrible. The person responsible for all those nose horns should have his eyes stabbed out (but he is probably blind anyway, there is no other explanation for this stupid look).
I'd love to hear why these are both equally objectionable.

I don't want to single you out, but your post is one of those exemplary posts that make me always wonder if it takes a conscious efford to ignore the fact that a LOT of players and DMs who might want to continue playing 3.X will simply find themselves out of a group or a gaming community supporting their game of choice, or if it is such a hard idea to wrap one's brain around? D&D is different from other RPGs in that it has the biggest pull on players and DMs...but always with the most current edition. What good is it to me that all my 3.X books are still there, if any suggestion to play it will be met with a stare or a cough or a mocking grin and a comment along the lines of "man, that game is SO outdated, get with the time"? The efford to find palyers (or DMs) in your area that still play an "outdated" and "obsolete" game is growing exponentially with every bit of advertisement that comes from WotC in the next 8 months.

So no, a strong 4th edition will certainly diminish the fun of those who still want to regularly play 3.X in many places. If you don't believe me, or can't see that...well, there's nothing I can say to change that either, I guess. But think about it and try to put yourself in those shoes. It doesn't excuse extreme posts...but those come from either side of the fence. Emotions simply run high this week, with reason. In the end, we all like to play D&D, in our preferred edition. :)

But... everyone must play D&D exactly the way I want them to. Didn't you get the memo?

:D
