* For weapon-using artificers, all the powers are Ranged OR Melee Weapon, and use Intelligence for both. So if your crossbow-wielding artificer is stuck in melee, he can drag out a spear or what-have-you and go to town just as effectively.
He could alternately use a thrown weapon as his primary, and be very effective at melee and short range, falling back to his secondary weapon (crossbow) when forced to fight at long range.

Make that laser cleric REALLY jealous!

Comparing with previous editions, I still love the Wizard, I love more the fighter now, and I love so much more the new rogue!

As a DM, I don't usually play, but my most played class was the fighter, so far.

One of the other things I love about teh Swordmage is the elemental versatility. When the prime races for the class are Genasi (elemental) and Githyanki it makes great flavour sense to either build elemental mastery (Elemental Tempest Paragon Path rocks!) or to be able to tailor your powers to a certain elemental theme or manifestation.

Weirdly I like the dimensional breaching... nature of the swordmage... I don't walk between planes I cut my way and energy explodes around me as I do. I use my left hand for destruction and my right hand for defense and healing, the unicorns horn I visualize as a right hand effect. The Ghost Blade who mows down an army.... as he moves in to epic. I am one of the Swordlords.

I'd be curious how this would compare to a 3.5 version of the same poll. Not trying to start an edition war, just wondering which classes have gone up and down in popularity.

We've had quite a few popularity contests in the days of 3.x

... if you were a Community Supporter, you could search for them! ;)

So far it looks like the most popular party lineup is fighter, rogue, sorceror, wizard, and warlord. Those are the classes scoring over 50%.

Interesting to see a lot of the classes fairly close in popularity. Like a lot of others, I'm a fan of a lot of classes, and there aren't any that I would not be willing to play, so I voted for the ones I'd most like to play or have played and enjoyed.

I'm a bit surprised at the lack of love for the Artificer. The only beef I have with the class is that the Con build seems a bit too strong, and the Wis build a bit too weak. I'm playing the Wis build in an Eberron game, though, and having a blast. I'm also surprised at the popularity of the Avenger, which doesn't appeal to me at all.

The Shaman I would have been suprised at, but I've seen posts about people not liking the complexity of having to use the spirit companion (a tactical positioning aspect that I think of as a plus). I also like that it lets you spread the healing around a bit after combat, healing people without using their surges, which adds a lot to a party's staying power in dungeon crawls.

I think I may have, accidently, skipped the Shaman when voting. From what I saw of the Shaman, it's not among my favorites, but I do like it better than the Paladin and several of the other non-PHB classes. I would, probably, like it better had WOTC had taken an approach similar to Green Ronin's Master Class series when introducing new classes- a supplement that focuses on a single class and does so in more indepth than we get in PHB2 or will in Primal Power.

Speaking for rmyself, I prefer the 4e Rogue and Ranger (I am a fan of the spelless ranger variant from Complete Champion and similar non-official variants that predate it). I also prefer both the Wizard since it is more balanced with the other classes and the fighter.

On the other hand, I like the 4e Barbarian and Paladin a lot less. I don't like the elemental powers or many of the power names of the former . As for the latter, I dislike many of the powers and/or fluff including divine challenge.

To be fair, a lot of my like for the 3e barbarian comes from the hunter variant in Unearthed Arcana- especially, when combined with both the favored environment and weapon group variants from the same book). It captures more of the 1e Barbarian flavor for me without all of the broken bits of it.
