D&D 4E 4e Familiars more than just a skill buff ?

First Post
Any rumors going around about them ? I haven't found anything.

Just wondering if they're going to play a major role in a wiz/sorc build equivalent to wand/staff that they're talking about now. There an awful lot of non-combat flavour that can be put into them (as well as some combat ofc) .

anyone heard anything ?

My guess?

They bite the dust hard, and wizards no longer have pets.

Though there's a half-dozen ways to make them cool, I;m wagering Wizards went for the simplest approach and nixed 'em, since so few people really used them anyway.

Because of the potential, I wouldn't be surprised if they survived in the form of a Feat. Makes more sense that way anyway. A Wizard goes through the processes of calling a familiar the same way that a Fighter practices advanced grappling techniques. No reason they need to be a defining trait of the Wizard.

Hmm....well there are already a ton of things you can do with a familiar, the problem is that they are so fragile and the penalties for losing them quite significant that most people keep them out of harms way. If they simply made it so the familiar's death only causes it to be banished for 1 day, then you'd see alot more of their being used as scouts, spies and delivers of touch spells.

Weither this is a good thing or not of course is debatable.

What are those six ways? I don't think I've ever seen cool familiars.

It'd be hard to pull off really cool familiars. The thing with familiars in myth/popular fantasy is that they're usually not so much expendable scouts like in D&D so much as....eh...kind of like the cat in the various incarnations of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

The familiar is more like a teacher or mentor than a sidekick. You keep them around because they know more about magic than you do (for the brash young spellcaster) or because they can assist you in magic rituals and arcane trivia (For the more seasoned archmage)

That's not a role that would be easy to fit into D&D though.

I think they should just make familiars be a feat that anyone can take. It is not like the concept of a familiar is limited to just wizards, anyway. The "familiar" is just a subset of the general idea of the magical pet/ally.

Also, the need to make familiars more useful. As a living stat buff, they really arn't interesting at all. More needs to be made of the fact that they are physical, living creatures. The best use I have seen of familiars was in a board game, where one option is having a pair of ferrets who can easily grab treasure off the ground and move around items between allies in the heat of battle.

Also, the big thing is that people shouldn't have to worry about familiars in a fight. I think they should be lucky, small, and skilled enough that you just say they will not get hurt in battle unless specifically targetted, and will always stay out of the way. They shouldn't be fragile.

The best pop culture versions of familiars that I cna think of are the wind mouse Hanpan from the videogame RPG Wild Arms, Pooka from Wild Arms 2, Navi from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Puck from the manga Berserk. Interestingly, three of those are teamed up with swordsmen, and the last is teamed up with a Shaman/Druid character. One provides advice and a light source, one is a jokester who opens chests and hits switches, one can combine with magical powers to transform into a monster (and hits switches and opens chests), and the last provides humor and is a constant source of healing.

Edit: Another thought is that the undead monkey Jack from Pirates of the Carribean is another good example of a familiar. Does anyone have more good examples?
