Just curious. I see a lot of people saying they like it or dislike it, but it's hard to understand what this means unless they have played it.

FWIW, I'm in the "indifferent have not played yet."

There is no "other" option because I want to commit to a choice. ;)

Went with "Indifferent, have played".

While I seriously dig the clean-up of the d20 engine, I am really disappointed by the extensive intrusiveness of gamist mechanics.

I was pretty sure I was going to like it before I played, and I do.

I've played in a Keep on the Shadowfell preview session (right at the beginning of June, before the books came out), and I've run "Kobold Hall" for my wife, with her playing all five characters.

We're converting my Pathfinder Rise of the Runelords game to Fourth Edition next Tuesday, and I just got invited to play in a friend's new Fourth Edition game last night. That's exciting, because I've never been in a game he's GMed, though we've played together in two ongoing games in the past.

I'm also playing in a GURPS Fourth Edition game. :p

From what I saw, I felt I was going to like it. It wasn't perfect, but it was far closer to my view of gaming perfection than 3.5. A few minor tweaks, some homebrewed feats and races, and BAM! I got just what I wanted.

Met my expectations, and, save for a few bits (MW armor, for example... rather confusing) exceeded them.

I, too, thought I would like it based on the previews posted here and elsewhere, although I was more than a bit apprehensive about the changes (having grown up, literally, with D&D). After reading the books and running a few "practice" combats, I like it even more than I imagined.

And I can't wait to start my first 4E campaign this week...

I love it - although I was apprehensive before the books came out with the rumour mill abounding with Warcraft similarities. Now well stuck into KoTS I'm enjoying it more than any previous RPGs I've played. Nice quick combat, everyone has something special to add to the mix and some encounters are worth running away from. IMO WoTC have done a sterling job with 4th ed and I think it is good for the hobby in general. If you don't think you will like it just give it a few games and levels before you make your mind up for sure.

I voted "Indifferent, have played it", but that's not precisely how I feel.

I love certain elements of the design - minions, easy encounter creation, the concept of skill challenges (if not the exact execution thereof), the general "say yes" emphasis, etc...
But I also hate certain other elements - inconsistent rules, anti-simulationist approach, extreme lack of variety, "sameness" of classes, etc.

It's very polarized. There's enough stuff I like that I may well end up sticking with the system, and I do have to admit the combats are pretty fun so far. But I can't help but feel there's just a lot of depth and versimillitude just plain missing from the system.

Dislike it, have played. Even though I went into the game thinking rather negatively about it, thanks to what WoTC did to the Realms, the game itself was still bad.

I'll check again in a years time, when we've got the PHB2 and Pathfinder Final to play with.

4E is totally, utterly a combat game. Everything elese is just a minor addtion.

Daily and and Encounter are really destructive for verisimilitude.:uhoh:

I could have lived with all that, the whole simpleton combat-is-everything approach to roleplaying, because there are some good points in 4E, but ...

I had my conversion notes for Mystara for 4E 60% done, when I at last had a look at the GSL, and found out that I will be sued for putting house rules on my homepage (Like changing the way Encounter and dayly powers work). :(
Abandoned 4E at once.

THIS IS JUST MY CONSIDERED OPINION; so please no edition wars in this thread.
