I asked 'The Prophet', a burned out old insane wino who lives behind the garbage container that is behind the liquor store. Stories told by the street people is that 'The Prophet' has been touched by fate and knows the future.

'The Prophet' wanted a quart of whiskey....prophecy is hard, thirsty work, he said.

At any rate...'The Prophet' says that 4E will come out in September of 2010.

Well, it's been a good run. We had a couple good months without another 4E prediction thead.

Yeah, can we try to get through the rest of 2005 without invoking The Edition That Must Not Be Named? One of these days you're going to call it into being...

Kinda like the old urban legend of saying "Bloody Mary" in the mirror three times, eh?

Not me. I think the sooner 4e comes out, the sooner I can retire my hobby. THAT's how jaded I am. :\

Quick hypotheticals here, then...

First case -- suppose WotC released "Ranger REG's version of the perfect quasi-medeival fantasy RPG" tomorrow, for a reasonable price (in your opinion), with your version of the perfect licensing terms for third parties. Would you buy it?

Second case -- WotC releases the same game tomorrow, but calls it "D&D 4th Edition". Would you buy it then?

Enough.

Just to be clear, the point of this was not to provoke speculation or anything of the sort, it was to corroborate or disprove a rumor. I considered it disproven before the end of the first page of this topic...if it were true, someone would know.

Honestly, I am surprised this topic still on the front page.

Now you know what happens when you bring up anything having to do with a new edition!

I've seen several people claim that that a small number of d20/OGL publishers likeGreen Ronin, Malhavoc, Mongoose would likely be able to adapt to a post d20STL/OGL world. I certainly hope that this is possible , but can we be sure that would happen? Very few of these companies are truely established. Certainly it is clear that these companies are trying to branch out in preparation for this possibility, but I find it difficult to believe the directors of these companies aren't worried about how they're companies would perform if WotC pulled the OGL.

Of course we are concerned about the timing of a potential 4th edition. Its announcement could affect many projects that'd already be in motion, as well as our broader d20 strategy. There was a point when I suspect 4E would hit in 2006, but I no longer think that's the case. Now I'd say 2007 at the earliest.

While a potential announcement would surely affect our plans, we have enough other stuff going on (WFRP for GW, Mutants & Masterminds, True 20, etc) that we can deal with whatever comes down the pipe. If the 4E rules aren't added to the SRD, we can adapt.

And all of this assumes that the d20 market is going to be worth supporting with continued product by the time 4th edition comes out anyway, which is by no means a given.
