4E is Diablo 2?

Silly rabbit, I thought it was agreed by now that D&D 4e is just a variant of Earthdawn.

Not that that's a bad thing. Not at all. :D

D&D 4 can be a lot of things! (Including not D&D and Retro D&D!) ;)

Maybe D&D is more like a mirror - except instead of seeing a reflection, you can see anything you want to see... Though... That's not really a mirror...

Okay, maybe there's a better analogy. Maybe something with bees and flowers... or peanut butter and ice cream...

OMG! 4E IS AN ILLUSION! Suddenly, not only does that explain everything, it also make severy thing clear...

So...very....clear....

Hmm. If 4e is an illusion, then 4e is a lie. And if the cake is a lie, then 4e must be cake!!!

The thing that popped out about D2 in 4e to me was the "level requirements for magic items" thing.

Though there are still levels associated with items, the actual prerequisite has been removed. A 1st level character can wield a 30th level item without any problems. The levels act as more of a guide in order to give out level-appropriate equipment to keep PCs relatively on par with the EL system.

*Then I eat the cake* ;)

It's so delicious and moist!

But, back to the original topic....

Sure, there are definitely several video game influences in 4e (WoW, Diablo II, etc. etc.) as well as several influences from relatively recent RPGs and TCGs, as well as anime and over-the-top cinematic movies.

None of which, IMHO, are bad things.

I was reading through my PHB and DMG last night when I came to the conclusion that 4E is basically Diablo 2 in paper form. I noticed that most magic items don't grant new abilities but instead improve upon abilities that the PCs already have. This reminded me of Diablo 2 in that the magic items all increase abilities that you already have in your skill tree.

Personally I kind of like that since I never liked that a character was more defined by their magic items than their own abilities in the earlier editions.

Has anybody else come to this conclusion?

Yes. Limited classes, limited options, limited powers, and monsters that are the same except for different names/power levels. Oh, and all classes get powers.

Man, my internet memes are too old.

I thought 3e was Diablo 2? Or was it Diablo 1? It was one of the Diablos, I'm certain.

-O

I am not sure, but wasn't there a D&D Diablo (tabletop role-playing) game, based on 3E? I have vague memories of one of the members in my group mentioning having bought it, many solar cycles ago...
