D&D 4E 4E: Manufactured Excitement

I remember when Second Edition came out. I loved it, but I could admit that it was not a perfect system. After a few years, the things that annoyed me about it started to pile up. When 3e was announced I was extremely excited about WotC's 'money-grubbing, financially motivated' attempt to improve the game.

I remember when Third Edition came out. I loved it, but I could admit that it was not a perfect system. After a few years, the things that annoyed me about it started to pile up. When 3.5 was announced I was convinced, having seen the previews, that WotC's 'money-grubbing, financially motivated' attempt would improve the game.

I'm hoping that 4e gives me 5-6 years of sweet, sweet D&D goodness. After a while, I'm sure little things that annoy me will start to pile up, at which point... :)

Hope for a better game, given past experience. Ok, I can see that. I just hope the incrementally larger amount of fun is equal the expense.

The enthusiasm of the posters on this board doesn't bother me at all. I'm happy that they're happy.

What seems manufactured to me is the enthusiasm of several of the folks at WotC who are playtesting and designing the new game. I'm really tired of hearing how KEWL!!!1!!! the new game is and how in comparison 3.5 sucks eggs. It's starting to sound a bit like Stepford wives in chearleading uniforms to me....

No. I dread the day I have nothing to look forward to.

You are so right. My aversion to leaping headfirst into the publicity campaign surrounding 4E means I look forward to nothing in my life.

And I thought I was looking forward to a nice drive in the country.

Ok I can see this; you feel like your house rules are being "justified" in a way by reflecting, in advance, 4e. I guess I can understand that sort of satisfaction; it makes you feel like your own game is linked into the designers, in a way.

Thank you for validating my initial assessment of this thread.

I'll tell you what I'm excited about.

Hopefully by August 2008, I won't be seeing as many threads like this.

I'm excited about reading very "clever" comments such as this, which really add a lot to the debate.

Well done!

I can't get enough of them!

I'm excited almost for the pure adrenaline of it. I like teaser and spoiler info. :)

I paid rapt attention to the nWoD transition without really ibtending to buy the books.

(Ironically, I plan to switch to D&D 4e, despite fluff changes. I rejected nWoD precisely due to fluff changes.)

In answer to your question:

Baaaaaaaaa!*

*If, as you say, we're sheep-like thralls without minds of our own, how could we give a sensible answer?

The careful reader notes that I am not calling everyone who participates in 4e thread the above; I in fact was commenting on what I saw as the blind enthusiasm and excitement of certain posters, and poster-types.

Ah, quite true. I went back and re-read your initial post. By a careful reading I deduced that the only poster the sentence can be construed to explicitly apply to is MerricB.

:uhoh:

Of course, in a careful reading of your last {quoted} post, I see that the implicit connotation that the previous poster is not, in fact, a careful reader.

A review of the recent rash of posts reflect a similar implicit condensending attitude to those posters who have taken their time to respond to what is, IMHO, nowhere near an 'actual debate', such as you appear to consider it. While at the same time you brush aside a number of posts on the merit that you feel that they are not adding alot to the 'debate'.

Hmm.. perhaps I will check back later to see if an actual debate has grown out of the "powerful fertilizer" littering this thread, or the thread ends up getting locked for lack of useful debate and over-abundance of personal attacks.

two, your utter disdain for the other posters in this thread, who have responded in varying degrees ranging from constructively answering your post to replying in exactly the same tone that you yourself started the 'debate', shows you up for what you are.

MerricB, like the vast majority of ENW posters, adds value to this board and makes it an exciting place to visit. What do you add?
