D&D 4E 4E Modern

And you've done of good job of it. I'm enjoying the write-up.

As to the names issue all strong heroes aren't the same, any more than all Rangers are the same. You could call the strong hero the Thud-F*** and it wouldn't change the nature of the class.

Thank you, and LOL....
Personally I always thought 'Fighter' was a pretty lame class name, but it hasn't stopped me from having some pretty awesome warriors over the years.

Minor Addition

In play I've noticed something lacking for the Bodyguard and Juggernaut, so I made a minor revision. I added the option to each to allow them to use their Con modifier for certain types of basic attacks. Here are the updated files. I was also wondering if anyone has been using this, and how it seems to work for them.

Based on a very quick scan, I like what you did here. While I'm not certain that I would want to actually play a 4ed Modern (I tend to go more toward Shadowrun for that stuff -- yes I realize that's beyond modern) I do find this interesting. In particular, I've been toying with the idea of creating a campaign world where gunpowder (and thus guns) is just coming into the fold. The dilemma of course is how to stat out guns in terms of damage, range, cost etc. What you have here definitely gives me some ideas, and a place from which to start.

Thank you. I just based firearms on the existing rules and added a few extra details where needed. Since most attacks are handled by the existing powers, I tried to keep the weapons simple since the powers do most of the work.

Hey Dirk, just wanted to say I remember seeing your version months back and really liking what you've done, and the revisions seem to be making it better and better- so awesome work, and glad that someone's 4e Modern went somewhere great :)

Thanks Dave! I appreciated you looking at it early on and you really inspired me to keep plugging along with this. Now if anyone knows anyone at WOTC or some other publishers out there... :^)

Well....I'm one of Dirk's players so I can talk from that perspective. We've been playing it for a good few months now and it seems to work pretty well. We all have been having a great time with the game. There are parts that we didn't get into, like the cybernetics, but most of the stuff we have had a good chance to test out and it all seems pretty smooth.
One other thing that we just did that worked well was that Dirk handed us some Alpha Tech cards from Gamma World to use as "experimental Tech." The items worked for one encounter....worked well and was fun....

Another minor revision

Sorry for another revision so soon, but something came up in our session last night. We noticed that the party's Gunslinger just felt underpowered compared to the other combat oriented characters, so we discussed replacing the current special ability with the quarry power that was given to the Tech Archer. I had thought about giving the career a static bonus to damage with one-handed firearms before, but realized that would make them too powerful with some of their attacks. I think this will act as a better option. Thoughts?

Not sure if anyone still checks this thread, but I meant to write up a little post-game analysis after we finished our campaign with the system and forgot to do so. So for anyone still reading...
It actually seemed to work out pretty well, which surprises me since this was my first attempt at this kind of thing. There were tweaks made during the process and I think some of the careers are either too specific or underpowered compared to others, but that might just depend on the style of game being played. One thing I learned from this was 4E works best with an action-oriented style of campaign, but I would probably not use this for something like gritty noir stories or a pure horror campaign. I am sure someone could adapt it to other genres, but there are also so many other systems out there that work much better for specific genre. But for our action sci-fi campaign, I think it worked just fine. Has anyone else been using this, and if so, what genre and how has it been working?
