[4e][Paragon] Kombat Kraziness (closed)

I've been enjoying it too, despite the fact that the cage took away the shifty build that I put into Erdric. This should have been a great battle site for him, laughing as he ignores difficult terrain to circle arround and pick of isolated targets with prime shot. But no, the briar witch had to go and ruin that. :p

But seriously, it's been a good display of tactics for the most part, despite our inability to really discuss the way I would at a table.

And don't worry, Covaithe, Erdric wouldn't have taken a pot-shot at the choker if it had Tharos in its grasp.

Liked the fight very much!

I don't know how effective Reed was, but his powers were fun to use, even if he is built more for one or two eilte (or a solo) + minions battle.
Love the synergy between 1 HP and curse boon.

With the size of this group, there's basically no way you'll fight a solo that pretty much by itself. You can almost fight two solos of your level even before we start increasing the level of the encounters. The next fight is basically a solo plus another full squad of monsters.

I'm not convinced that minions are actually worth 1/4th a monster at this level, since there are so automatic damage effects and area things that can kill them without significant effort. Plus, I didn't see any minions that would be a great fit.

Of course the Battlebriars don't seem very dangerous when all their OA miss. That was like 5 attacks (2x Xak, 2x Starwinds, Tharos, anymore?) at +19 each (not counting any situational mods like flanking)...

And don't worry, Covaithe, Erdric wouldn't have taken a pot-shot at the choker if it had Tharos in its grasp.

See, that's the beauty of those "use the grabbed target as a shield" powers. Either the victim has to escape or fight his way out on his own because people don't attack, or people do attack and he takes some damage instead of the choker. Interestingly, the choker's body shield power recharges when it hits with a Claw or Choke attack, unlike the recharge roll for the strangler's power.

I learned the hard way that even though I'm a defender, I don't want to be alone with an elite and a normal melee type monster :)

I think I picked some of my Smites a bit too situational (Invigorating Smite and Benign Transposition, namely), though it could be just getting used to options that are more varied than a Fighter or a 3.5 Warlock.

I have to agree that the Battle Briars didn't feel like the biggest threats, but they were the ones that made the battle the most challenging. Losing the ability to shift around them is huge, especially with Threatening Reach. So while they weren't the most dangerous opponents, they were the ones I had to look out for the most.

True enough. Of course, the PCs were actually very conservative with healing abilities, IMO. The fight ended with 3/4 class heals unused.

Invigorating Smite has seemed effective in my experience, but that group is fighter/paladin/warlord/warlock. So with the weaker healing from the warlord, heals from the paladin really come in handy. It should come in handy in the harder fights.

I figured the time to use Transposition would be when Starwinds was flanked by both Battle Briars.

I'm taking down all the maps from this fight. They are being saved. Let me know if you want them.

Oh yeah, I was thinking of starting a new thread so that the it's easy to find the start of encounter 2. Any problem with this?

Yeah, new thread is fine.

And I did consider using Transposition when Starwind got flanked, but then I realized that she would've ended up adjacent to the Choker and would've still been adjacent to one of the two Battle Briars. Not much of an improvement, especially with the Choker able to grab on a succesfull OA.
