Oh, SURE, resort to comic book geekery. Now I have to post!

The Fantastic Four strike me as the prime example of a perfectly balanced group:

Mr. Fantastic: Leader. Coordinating and facilitating, whether physically or mentally.
Invisible Woman: Controller. Her force fields alter and reshape the battlefield, and she can easily handle multiple opponents.
Human Torch: Striker, nearly the exemplar of one--high movement and DPS.
The Thing: Defender all the way, the classic tank.

The Justice League...

Defenders: Superman, Wonder Woman. Sure, they've got aspects of other roles, but their primary job is to stand up to the big opponents, holding the line so their squishier teammates don't get...squished.

Strikers: Black Canary, Arsenal, Hawkgirl, Flash, Vixen. Movement, agility, DPS.

Controllers: Green Lantern defines battlefield control. And Geoforce, I suppose, although he's a drip and far inferior to one of the best controllers in the DCU: his dead half sister, the late great Terra.

Leaders: The Martian Manhunter. Yeah, he's got a ton of powers, but back during Morrison's JLA, the team won most often not by powers or strength or genius but through the teamwork provided with J'onn's mindlink. Even the JLU Manhunter coordinates from the Watchtower.

Batman is a Defender, Striker, Controller, and Leader because he's an attention hog. Also he can breathe in space. (I love Batman.) I was going to peg him as a Striker (popping out of the shadows, taking on opponents one by one), but he is the tactics guy...so he is a Leader, albeit an uncomfortable one.

*flaily hands* Stop being interesting, I have to work! :D

damage per second

Which doesn't really make much contextual sense in D&D as fights aren't rated in terms of how much literal DPS a group needs to bring to a fight to have a reasonable chance of beating it, but the term has become more or less synonymous with burst damage capability.
