I too love this idea... would have been an awesome way to teach my gf how to play!...

I will actually probably run her through this with a new character just to refresh my DM'ing skills and also to help her learn the game better.

I think this would be one good way to introduce some new people to D&D. There may be folks out there interested in D&D, but held back by the idea of jumping into a group of experienced friends or strangers playing a complicated looking game. It is probably not uncommon for people to turn down a chance to play simply because of a bit of social anxiety.

A DM - one player game is a more gentle way to teach someone to play, and provides a self-confidence boosting familiarity with how the game works. This could simply be a prelude to introducing them to a group.

It reminds me of the movie Footloose. In the movie there is a guy who doesn't know how to dance, but becomes a confident dancer simply because a trusted friend teaches him how to dance one on one. In this way, D&D is not much different than dancing. It is a form of social expression that even timid introspective types can appreciate if guided in by a trusted friend.
