hit points:

8 (max for 1 HD) + (5 x 5.5) + 12 (con bonus) = 47

There we go... that seems to make sense now.

EDIT: no it doesn't. That 5.5 is wrong. Hmm. how about d6? using triple starting?

18 + 17 + 12 = 47

Aha! But that's assuming d6 HD for immortals.... or maybe skirmishers... which would make sense, actually.

The Spot is strange, since I thought perception pretty much replaced spot/listen. I think that monster technically still use feats.. they're just not listed.

I'm not a big fan of the unified defenses, but then again outsiders had all "good" saving throws, so maybe they're not all unified

re

Puggins,

That arm wrestling comparison better not be a reality of the new game. Stats should not be heavily influenced by level for such checks. I hope the game has more verisimlitude than basing stat checks for everything on level.

Did you notice that the melee attack was vs. AC

and the ranged attack was vs. Ref defense

?????
Isn't the ranged attack called Spiked Rain? It's likely a volley of missiles that need to be dodged, something like a "single-person area attack" that would trigger a Reflex save?

I don't play D&D Minis, so it's fair to ask whether, under 3.5, the stat blocks for minis and full 3.5 monsters are presented the same way? If the 3.5 minis stat blocks are somehow abbreviated or simplified, then it's fair to suggest that the same is true for a 4E minis stat block and its relationship to a full 4E stat block.

Maybe that is enough? Do we really need to know what the Spined Devil's Use Rope and Forgery skills are?
I figured that's what the ability bonus thingies were for -- untrained skill checks.

And when the devils are hiding in the corner, how do I adjudicate whether they're spotted?

+5 total hide bonus for an untrained skill. +2 Dex bonus and +3 for level. Spot is the only listed skill because it is apparently the only "trained" skill the Devil has.

The mini-stat cards never where a very good interpretation of the actual D&D monsters and or characters they represented. I wouldnt be surprised if the actual stat block was a little different. However, I think even with this preview its ugly. Im already not keen on no HD, NO BAB, Saves as Defense. Ewww. . . .
Oh well.

Actually some other poster gave a run down of something like "no negatives" to stats anymore but who knows?

So evidently its

18-19+7
16-17+6
14-15+5
12-13+4
10-11+3
8-9 +2
6-7 +1

If this is correct it could explain how D&D will be less magic item dependent.
