4th Edition Anger Spills onto the Table

I'm probably the most enthused about it, I've never encountered any negativity.

I haven't really encountered any "hate" in discussions. However, the day before the announcement I posted on the forums for my FLGS (with all the things that appeared). The thread got no traffic, but that weekend the manager told me that everyone was upset about it. I haven't really discussed it with that group directly, though.

In our group, everyones pretty positive about 4th edition, but it's just a sideline topic. At the table I usually make a few off-hand comments about what are the latest significant 4th edition news (since only I and one player follow the news), I get back a few of "Sounds cool", "That's alright" and "That's a good idea" and then we get on with stuff.

If asked at my FLGS and the owner said the results where mixed. D&D isn't really the big seller there anyway.

None of the people I game with in real life knew about 4E until I told them about it. Of course, it's a pretty small group, and none of us put any real effort into keeping up on new releases of RPG material.

No one in my group is very excited about 4E. There's a lot of grumbling about money grubbin' hasbro. So far, we haven't come to blows over it or anything.
I guess we'll see what happens come May.

Is anyone else already seeing the hate spill over from the world of message board rants into face to face games? It's over seven months away from launch, and I was really surprised to see this. We have about 16 people who regularly attend our games, and this was the first time someone was so angry about 4th edition and Wizards.
Flat-out hate? Nope.

All my players just shrugged and said they have no interest in even bothering to learn a bunch of new rules when the current game is giving them exactly what they want - much less purchasing any books whatsover - end of discussion.

No anger, I'd say more apprehension. However it has put a severe kybosh on gaming. Our group was kinda transitioning DM's when the announcement came, since then we've done squat. We still meet every week and talk about how we should get back to the gaming table but no one seems to want to step in and DM simply to fill time until we have an idea of what our go-forward gaming will be like. And so again tonight it looks like we'll be hooking into the LAN and seeing what Battle.net has to offer.....

Most of the gamers I talk with in meatspace disliked most of what they've heard about 4e and (like myself) seriously doubt we'll adopt it. And we're none-too-thrilled with the way the current regime has discarded us "old" gamers.

That said, no one is frothing at the mouth or burning effigies. If that's the direction WotC wants to take their product, that's their choice. We'll just sit out 4e (unless the third-party support picks up the slack) and check out 5e.

Third party support will pick up the slack. Between Paizo, Necromancer and Goodman, all of whom have indicated they are definitely or probably supporting 4E, you'll be able to be incredibly old school.

Very few of the gamers I know in real-life had heard about it before I told them. We've been about to start up a new campaign for a while, and I had hoped to get us in on the 4e Playtest. Everyone was really excited about the possibility but no such luck.

They're all still looking forward to a new edition though. Although not as much as I am.

D&D where I don't have to put Vancian magic into a hammer lock?

Sign me up! :D :D
