Agreed. If anything, I'd say 4e announced at Gen Con '07, then released at Gen Con '08...or something like that.
That is about the absolute earliest it really could happen at this point.
I think it is 50/50 or even slightly less that it will happen that fast. I do expect it fairly soon (before 2010), but I just don't see any really solid signs that it is being worked on at all yet.

I said in the previous email that this is evidence, but we still dont have a solid timeline. We already know 4e will be exclusive and obviously software will play a part.

I'm sorry I'm speaking as a detective not as the marketiing representative. Nothings been anounced yet, but in many of hte previous 4e threads its been hinted that there won't be an ogl with fourth edition.

with the code monkey move, we can suspect that they are moving d and d software in house. Possibly developing and bringing out a product at the end of 3e that will cary over to 4e

It's obvious; you don't need an announcement. Gosh.

But neglecting the sarcasm, I don't think this means 4E is imminent in any way. I think it means that WotC realized that code monkey publishing wasn't their best choice for digitized characters because of some flaw in their business model, and decided they wanted either an in-house team or another company to do it.

I think it was hinted at by other people that have no way of knowing. It might be correct, but I doubt anyone who knows is saying anything. So, we just get guesswork.

And see...Ive heard just the opposite of this. Right now, its all speculation, so who knows.

A lot of people are supposing as such, but I don't believe there's been any word from anyone connected with WotC. The only word on 4e I've ever heard from someone at WotC is "it's not currently announced". Essentially, no information.

Hasbro have an exclusive agreement with <someone> to produce the only licensed D&D computer games. It's entirely possible that someone in Legal spotted the Code Monkey agreement, worried about a potential conflict, and ordered the cancellation of that license.

It's also entirely possible that WotC are planning to go to a subscription model on their webpage, including an online character generator. I rather doubt that this will be the case - as far as I can tell, Wizards do not have the software expertise to take on a project of that magnitude.

Heh. :D

Well, to pile on I think it would be prudent to cut down on the "we know" and instead come clear with the fact that it's "I think".

Otherwise people will want a source. Speculations is a fine and dandy, but claiming that "we know" that 4e will be exclusive and whatnot is a bit over the top.
