"Industry notables" and "people with actual information" are not the same thing. Being notable does not imply you're in on the business decisions of WotC. A notable may have perspective that makes predictions more likely, but we should not confuse predictions with facts.

But this is the intraweb - since when have actual facts had any bearing in any way on any debate we care to have about any topic. :)

Oh yeah, and last weekend in the pub 4e not only looked at my girlfriend, it also spilt my pint!

Ok, lets just put the cards on the table. We're talking about what ifs whenever we're talkinga bout 4e. YOu wont get any hard nosed evidence because if there was, there wouldn't be any need to speculate. Two things that keep coming up among multiple sources is the lack of an ogl (or tweeaking of it) and supportive software for the system. NOw, in one, two, three years from now you can call me a liar but the point of my comments is to say what has been heavily speculated so far.

More speculation 4e will be announced at either gencon this year or winter fantasy next year, with a release date of gencon 2008 or winter fantasy 2009.

Well, yes, that's what we've been saying all along. There are no facts, and speculation should not be passed off as such. There is nothing that "we already know."

I look at this like movie spoilers. There are things that have been corroborated by a few very different sources. So I'm not taking it for fact, but I'll take it as more than likely true.

Frankly, I'm looking foreward to 4.5e speculation come gencon 2010.

4e: old and tired before it even got here. :p

Sure, it may happen that way. But I feel it is best to not take anything as a fact regarding 4E until it is actually a fact. The 4E hysteria is already bad enough without misunderstandings like in this thread. I've link to a supposedly well-informed rumor in a previous 4E thread that put the release of 4E into the first quarter of 2007, which we by now know to be wrong.

Given the large list of 3.5 compatible products coming out in July and August of 2007, I have my doubts about 4E in 2007.

I concur. If there was an announcement that 4E was in the works prior to those 3.5 releases (and through their first quarter of sales), or even confirmed leaks, they would likely not sell very well. I doubt WotC would want to risk losing money on any 3.5 release. I don't see much evidence of the "4E looming" rumors being valid.

It's also widely known that wotc has had problems with the legality of the OGL.

Please provide a link to the person speaking for WotC and what they said. I think you are either mistaken in regard to the validity of the source or misunderstanding what had been said. Whatever led you to make this statement, it would seem to need closer scrutiny.
