(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

Team Lake

The sword lit up on its command word, and Shade-9 held it overhead. It illuminated much of the cavern, quite a bit brighter (and more consistent) than the torches that Locklafd had placed about (and that would likely go out sooner rather than later). Even those who could see in the dark could make out a greater level of detail - wet spots in the muck, the vines as they floated on the surface in the middle of the lake, the "particulate" that Bjorn was about to swim into, that came down the "sewer" tunnel from the east.

OOC: People tend to forget that Darkvision turns darkness into dim light - where you still would have disadvantage on perception checks (which many DMs also translate to -5 on passive perception). There's a reason that the Drow famously use Faerie Fire and glowing fungi. Darkvision is good for some things (like Stealth!) but, you can't see very well with it.

Terrin walks in front of the wagon as it crosses the bridge. Hearing Merrick discuss plans with Shamal for dealing with the kobolds in the caves, he falls back beside the wagon to advise Corrah under the tarp on what he can see in front of them.

"I think the best place for our company to part, should you choose to go east to the caves, is at the base of the tower where there's the least chance of being seen," he says in a low voice while looking ahead expressionlessly.

As the wagon approaches the bend, Terrin passes back among the group, shifting his staff into his shield hand and uttering strange words in a harsh sounding tongue. He gestures in the air and places his hand on Urgan's shoulder.

"May my Lady grant secrecy to your departure," he says quietly.

OOC: Terrin casts guidance on Urgan and chooses Stealth, adding 1d4 to any ability check using Stealth that Urgan makes in the next minute.

the cart had stood on the bridge, paused momentarily, and the watchword had been shouted out. No response. And so the wagon started to proceed. When he judged the angle as best he could, Urgan made the distraction he had planned -- the scrabbling of rats just below the window on the gate-side of the parapet. Who knew if it would even be heard? But it was something, and then he too rolled out of the wagon on the inside, pressed himself against the wall and proceeded east.

Team Infiltrate / Team Caves

Corrah whispered to Terrin, "If you find Edgar, please put him to rest for me."

She patted Copper on the arm and whispered, "Take care of yourself, big fella!"

Then she hopped out of the wagon, rolled along the gravel until she was at the base of the tower, and waved to the others who would join her. They crept around the tower with their backs to the strange, enveloping black rock, and then set off eastward.

It was difficult to say if Urgan's spell of distraction had had any effect, but there was no call of alarm and no challenging questions roared from above. The wagon creaked its way westward. The river rushed under the bridge.

Corrah and the others ran, dashing between black avalanche rocks until they were out of sight of the Watchtower.

By then, the wagon had passed a turn in the road, and it too was out of sight.

After the cart crosses the bridge and is passing the tower, Merrick, Sees everyone jump out of the caravan and realizes they didn't bring the offering for the kobolds."

"Hey! Shamal, wait!" he hisses in a whisper

But the sound of the river is too loud and, too late, they are gone.

Merrick quickly grabs the small flask they'd found under the seat, along with a small barrel of food and jumps out after them.
