5e Are Ioun stones supposed to need attunement?

Here is a thought: maximum attunment slots = 3 +/- Int modifier.

It's a common complaint that Int doesn't do enough...

I might do something like...can only have attuned one item of a given type i.e. one weapon, one glove/gauntlet, etc. and all items require attunement.

There was no attunement limit in that edition.

Personally I think attunement is fine, the limit of 3 is like you know really limiting. Use attunement but drop the number limit completely.

It's in mine, and I have the first printing. I doubt they removed it for subsequent printings but maybe there was an error?

I have three separate printings of the DMG (first edition, first errata, and gift set) and each one says they require attunement.

Attunement but no limit just means you cant freely swap items between characters, takes a short rest.
