D&D 5E 5e CB's Stonefast OOC -- COMPLETE

Forged Fury, we ninja'd one another in the IC just now. I was editing as you were posting. If you haven't seen my edit, go take a look and modify accordingly, pls.

Combining separate OOC comments (emphasis added):
. . . < snip >I've discovered that I have to be cautious about 5e rules adjudications in order to avoid inadvertent edition cross-pollination. For this first year, this has meant looking up every.single.thing in the PHB to verify for accuracy. Tedious. There are times I wish I could unlearn 3.x. I'm glad to know what from previous editions informs 5e, but have to be careful to wall off knowledge.

If you wall off knowledge, doesn't that give you "off-the-wall" knowledge? (OK, never mind. :) )

With all that discussed, I think Roscoe can still get to H30 given his halfling ability and attack. His question was whether he could attack from his square diagonally into the spider's square. I think the rules would provide a cover advantage to the spider against that attack given the corner there.

Right. So it must have been the corner between I-30 and H-31 that gave the spider cover against Guran's thrown handaxe. That makes sense.

A thing which occurred to me, but that I did not try to post IC, was the following:
Guran could have continued his previous, religion-based interaction with Father Spec by faintly recalling something about the Sacred Flame cantrip (which spell Guran cannot cast), with Guran's recall being based on the training he received during the (pre-game) time spent acquiring his Acolyte background, specifically this: "S.F. Ignores Cover."

It gets complicated by the fact that Guran is not particularly clever: it might not occur to him to suggest that Spec move 5 feet north to the middle of the short corridor (that is, to I-30), from which space Spec could then still attack the spider equally successfully using Sacred Flame, which ignores cover -- but which movement would then allow someone else (such as Guran, for example) to occupy I-31, from which it might be possible for that someone else to attack the spider without the spider's gaining cover due to the corner.

That's presumably a clever tactical twist that could be applied to this situation; but I think it's too clever by half for Guran to think of. (Spec might, though: he's much smarter.)

Well done, indeed. Each of you has reached 4th level. As a reminder, hit points are tabulated per your choice, either average per 5e PHB (e.g., 1d8 = 5 hp), or roll. If you roll, you get what you roll, no re-rolls. Please limit yourselves to material in the 5e PHB. Multiclassing and feats are available.

When the webs are disposed of, the party will find a coiled 100' length of rope that seems to have magic imbued in its weave that will require your time and attention to study during a short rest, 20 gp, 5 sp, and two desiccated fire beetle carcasses.

We are going to take a mini break from all combat encounters through October 16 (the end of my trial), and then we'll pick back up. Feel free to post at will in the IC. I'll respond when I can.

As I get back into DMing full-time and prepare to run a new long-term campaign, I'm seeking your feedback on these things:
1. Was the point buy sufficient at character generation? Would you have preferred more points to play with so you had a better build? Something different entirely?
2. How did the most recent combat go? Did you like updates after each character's turn? Or do you prefer the old system, where everyone posts actions at will which are then synthesized into one longer adjudication?
3. Was the map updated frequently enough during the most recent combat? Too frequently (were the maps a visual distraction)?
4. How's the formatting for the combat posts? Do you like the title that annotates the start of a new round? Should the initiative order be included in each combat post? Do you like the initiative order to go at the top or the bottom of the post?
5. Do you like knowing the monsters' hp?
6. Do you like individual or group initiative?
7. How's the format of the combat maps? Anything distracting on there? And, specifically, does a combat map need a background, or is plain white ok? Were the alphanumeric grid squares a help?
8. Other. Let me know if something's on your mind.

Incidentally, all, Morrus has implemented a change in the site. This morning he granted thread-starters in the Playing the Game forum the ability to edit and delete all posts in said thread. This means I could edit or delete any of your posts in the Stonefast IC. This is not an ability I plan to exercise. The only time I can envision using it would be to clean up the RG, removing inactive players--and the Character Optimization forum has no such moderation ability for thread-starters. Also, no clue if the ability to moderate is temporary or permanent. Morrus said he'll be making an announcement. Probably in Meta?

Just an FYI.

Cool. I bet that goes hand-in-hand with the yellow highlights I am seeing in some of the IC threads.

1. I thought the point-buy was fine. 27 hits a fair mark in my mind.
2. I thought it went fine. I like as close to a table gaming experience as possible, but completely understand that it can be challenging to keep up that posting rate.
3. The map updates were fine. Similar answer to #2.
4. I think the formatting is fine. I usually only need initiative at the top of the round, rather than every update.
5. I don't mind knowing creature HPs. It usually gets more important around 5th level when people start getting multiple attacks. Saves on the editing if you know that your first attacked dropped an enemy. You can edit in a move to another creature and attack.
6. I prefer individual, but can work with group.
7. Combat maps don't need backgrounds, IMO. The normal white excel background is fine. Please leave the grid designators, it makes it really easy to explain where you are moving.
8. I'm good, happy to be playing.

^That's weird and possibly broken. It inserted a new quote line and I can't get rid of it. I've tried to edit it a few times.
