D&D 5E 5e Magical Girl Class

Matita

First Post
About two weeks ago a friend of mine heard I played D&D and texted me asking if she could join, me and her are very close and I was honestly surprised at myself I had never invited her so I told her of course! She came over that day to make her character and while she was looking at the class she sounded disheartened, she entered the game thinking the same way I did a few months ago that you can do whatever you want basically, she didn't really understand the game had a system so she wanted to make a Sailor Moon character.

So remembering how upset I was when the BS shapeshifter class I wanted wasn't a reality I told her "You know what. We can do this later." So we proceeded to just hang out as normal that day, for the past 4-5 days I've been trying to make a decent Magical Girl Class and I'm decently pleased with what I have :). It's not all there yet heck I haven't even Spell-Checked the class build.

The Class is prepared for play from levels 1-7, but I'm not really sure what to do? If someone who would be willing to look at the class for me, offer me notes, ideas for higher levels, and you know.. Balancing issues. I'd beyond appreciate it, I do have a PDF of the build I could send so please message me any help I can get would be phenomenal anything for my PC's lol.

I saw other builds for Magical Girl classes but they were sloppy or very unbalanced and I don't want mine to be like that, I know homebrew classes sometimes have bad reputations for being too complicated or grossly overpowered but I'm willing to put alot of work into seeing this mess through. I'd appreciate any help, thank you :).

-EDIT-
This a link to the class build :)

I would use the warlock as a frame to build this. So instead of being powered by tentacles and the voices, you're powered by rainbows and sparkles. Same thing really :)

I imagine many of us would be happy to help out, but

a) you don't seem to have included the text you'd like us to review and

b) a description of what Sailor Moon is, or at least a description of your design goal, would be most helpful.

I agree with Ancalagon. When I think of the stereotypical magical girl like sailor moon or mahou shoujo madoka the first dnd class that comes to mind is warlock... just a prettier and possibly nicer version. There are a couple homebrew patrons that are good like the celestial patron that is in the enworld homebrew archetype list. A less creepy/mysterious fey patron might be good too. If i were to dm it I'd also refluff eldritch blast into radiant damage for this character (or whatever damage type fits best).

If you just want to post it in the Homebrew forum, I'd be more than willing to take a look at it. As far as concepts go, this one shouldn't be too complicated, once you've decided how you want to handle the sub-class issue.

Magical girl is not a class, it's a background.

Feature: Transformation Sequence
You can only cast your spells and use supernatural or magical abilities when you are in your Magical Girl form. Despite having the same general appearance as your normal form, no-one will recognize that you are the same person when in Magical Girl form. Transforming between Magical Girl form and your normal form is instantaneous and does not require an action, but somehow it feels like it takes about 30 seconds. The transformation sequence consists of exactly the same poses and light-show every time, regardless of your environment or surroundings.

Not sure if you're into other RPGs, but the soon-to-be-released Ultimate Intrigue book for Pathfinder has a Magical Girl archetype in it:

The magical child archetype covers the "magical girl" trope, with a transformation sequence ability (faster switch between identities, but with flashy lights and music), summoner spells, and an otherworldly buddy.

Might be worth looking at for inspiration/ideas even if you don't play PF.

Eldrich blast becomes rainbow blast etc etc :D

seriously speaking though, you do have to consider your other players. For some of them it will be hilarious. But some players might find this very... grating. They will think it breaks immersion/mood etc. So I hope you have looked at the bigger picture... sorry to be a bit of a wet blanket there, but as a GM you have to do it.

That being said... totally warlock. A lot of spells a warlock can get can be given a second coat of paint and become very magical-girl like - like I did with eldrich blast :)
