D&D 5E 5E PHB on Amazon $30 Pre-Order

It is sitting at 160US for everything on Amazon (including screen); which is pretty darn good for a small box set, 3 hardcover Core Rulebooks, 2 hardcover adventures and a GM screen. Add to only 35 odd bucks to ship to NZ, in several packages.. just WOW for value.

I went to the WotC site and looked up Wizards stores in NZ, the closest (2 hours drive away) seems to have only board and card games on their web site, the next closest (6 odd hours away) does D&D stuff, at least 4E. I sent them both an email early last week about getting 5E from them, still no reply. So yeah over double the price (I guess) and crap customer service. What can I say, I love Amazon (and Lulu for cheap printing of PDFs and postage from Oz!)

I tried to pre-order the Starter Box and Player's Handbook and it took me four calls, as each time the person at the counter that answered the phone told me to call back later. They are supposed to be a Wizards Premier store, but had no idea when the products were to come out. At least they'd heard Dungeons and Dragons had a new edition coming out. I decided to order only the Starter Box through them for now and kept my pre-order through Amazon for now.

I haven't asked yet, but this is the response I expect from my LGS. Fighting someone in order for me to give them an extra $20/book is a difficult proposition.

To be fair the store is more of a comic book store than a full blown LGS. But when I've asked about upcoming comic book releases, I've gotten a similar style of answer.

Thaumaturge.

I'll get it at the local shop, partly because I can get it right freakin' now rather than waiting for shipping, partly because it's fun to go there, and a little bit because I get to feel virtuous for supporting a local business. The "right now" part is what keeps me coming. I've asked about a product before, and they told me they could order it, but I told them flat out "I can order it too, probably at a really good price. You need to keep stock on hand, because I'm here because I want to page through an actual book, and if I'm here it's because I want it now" Also, I suppose it's because for someone with a professional income, saving $20 isn't that big of a deal.

I'm always surprised by folks without a shop, especially those in a major city. Ann Arbor's not that big of a city but there are 3 well stocked shops within 10 minutes of my house. I won't go to the closest one because the owner's a huge jerk, but the other two are fine.

Do we know anything yet about availability/pricing for electronic editions?

Over the last couple of years, I've developed a strong preference for getting RPG books in PDF format. I figure I'll get the starter set from my FLGS, and the new "Basic D&D" PDF will be a must-have for me, but I'll be a lot more likely to buy the 5e core books in electronic rather than print form.

I stopped buying the 4e hardcovers when they stopped releasing them as PDFs. I will probably not buy into 5e if I can't get PDFs of the rulebooks.

I did the same. Then had to buy an Essentials book to see what that was all about.
I definitely want digital PDFs.
With DnDClassics and the Basic D&D online, I think we can see the push for digital offereings.
I'm going to hazard a guess that they will indeed be available.
Maybe not the same time as book release, but they will be available.

Pre-order of the core three is currently holding at $98.63 (I also pre-ordered the starter set and first adventure, but was curious about just the core three).

My guess is that the DMG and MM go down a bit more and it ends up being ~$90 for all three.

Well, the PHB has settled in at $29.97 but the other two seem to be sticking at $34.33 which does keep it under $100.00.
